The 21-year-old moved further forward into midfield for the trip to Grimsby Town at the weekend, having operated at right-back in midweek.
Sitting in front of the back four, the deep-lying midfield role becomes the third position occupied by James this season having also slotted in at left-back for the Checkatrade Trophy meeting with Exeter City in August.
Speaking after the narrow 2-1 defeat to the Mariners in Lincolnshire, the Welshman hopes to continue his run in the side.
“I’ve had to be patient,” he told iFollow Glovers. “I’ve had a couple of games now so hopefully I can stay in the team and see how it goes from there.
“We did a bit of shape in the week so I had an idea I was going to be playing there (midfield), so I felt comfortable going into it in a new position.
“It’s not a role I’ve played in so much as in games, but in practice games and things like that I have so I know it a little bit but it’s good to have another position under my belt.”
Despite a fourth loss on the road this season, James felt their were positives to take from the performance at Blundell Park with one obvious area for improvement having conceded both goals from set-pieces.
“It’s those set-pieces again, we know we have to work on them and we will work on them this week.
They didn’t threaten us that much in open play and tactically we were quite good, it’s just those set-pieces which we have to work on.
“It was better but at the same time we still conceded two so it’s one of those things we have to work on and we have to get it right for the next game.”
