After Sandro Wieser’s 18th-minute red card, the Glovers capitalised on their one-man advantage through Otis Khan’s sublime curling effort and a smart finish from Francois Zoko.

The young Royals pulled one back through Andrija Novakovich just shy of the break, but Omar Sowunmi – making his first outing since August – and an own goal from Jake Sheppard ensured Town’s progression to the quarter-finals before Josh Barrett’s late consolation from the spot.

“I was very pleased with the performance,” Way told YTFC’s official YouTube channel.

“I thought the players from start to finish played very well and there were some great performances.

“I asked the players to show real character and personality and I think we saw that.

“We were up against a good, possession based team and they’ve caused other teams problems.

“I thought tactically the way we pressed in certain areas of the pitch was a big risk at times but the commitment to do that from the group made it work.

“We spent pre-season pressing that way against Tottenham and Swansea so it’s something the players are used to. Crawley was exactly the same where we won 5-0 so there has been spells where it’s worked very well.”

Way has previously expressed his desire to do well in the Checkatrade Trophy and last night’s win sees Town progress into the quarter-finals.

The 37-year-old praised his squad’s application in the competition and believes the group’s hunger will help them strive on.

He said: “I’ve supported the competition from day one and I think if you believe a little (anything’s possible).

“The supporters that turned up tonight were again amazing and fantastic.

“We want to try and give the club something back. The group of players are very hungry and gave a load of energy last night from start to finish to try and be as successful as we can in this cup.

“We’ll look forward to the draw. There are some strong teams in it but we’ll keep marching on and achieve by unity.”

The Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final draw will be made tomorrow (Thursday, January 12th) at 11.30am, live on Sky Sports News.
