INTERVIEW | Sarll ready to hit the ground running

The former Stevenage boss signed a three-year contract this week and will be tasked with rebuilding the squad ahead of the season start in August.

With a takeover of ownership currently being processed, Sarll is the first confirmed part of a new era and is looking for a quick change in momentum at Huish Park.

“We’re inheriting a team that’s largely lost for the last three years and to swing that mentality into a winning mentality will take a real dose of personality, courage and determination.

“We have to work within tighter financial constraints and that will never be used as an excuse, I’m aware of that. This league is a very different challenge, if you think it’s the Football League, it’s not. It’s very demanding and very intense.”

Boasting over 15 years’ experience as a coach and manager, the 36-year-old arrives in Somerset after spells at the likes of Brentford, Rotherham and Watford.

Known for his ability to develop young talent, Sarll knows what he wants from his playing staff.

“I’m a really honest person and there’s no grey area with me,” he told YTTV. “I’m very clear with what I expect and if you had any endorsements from players I’ve worked with they’d be positive.

“The players are going to have to work really hard and if any of them are feeling in a position where ‘I’m not a National League player’ they need to shake themselves out of that delusional state – this is where we are and this is what we’ve got to do to call ourselves Football League managers, coaches, players, physios, recruitment staff, press officers.

“It’s important we come with that sort of outlook because there’s only one remedy and that’s really going at it as hard and as long as we can in terms of fighting for this football club.”
