A few weeks after the Daily Express ran a story on an Asda employee believed to be the oldest trolley attendant in the UK, staff at the local Tesco superstore in Chard have unveiled the name of 83 year old colleague they believe should hold such a title.

Locally loved Tesco colleague and lifelong Yeovil Town supporter Pat McCann, who has worked at the Chard store for 13 years, turned 83 today and the club were pleased to present a personalised shirt to the long term season ticket holder.

The accolade of oldest trolley attendant was previously believed to be held by 81 year old Gerry Slater, an Asda man in Huddersfield who the Daily Express interviewed back in March.

But speaking ytfc.net, Service Manager at Tesco Chard, James Lawrence, was keen to ensure that stalwart colleague Pat was given the recognition he deserves.

“He’s really popular with our customers and is outside talking to them come rain or shine. He’s also a lifelong Yeovil Town supporter so, what with the side being relegated to League 2 recently, he could do with a bit of cheering up as well”.

When ytfc.net asked him what he was hoping for his birthday, Pat’s answer was more or less instantaneous: “For Yeovil to be back in League 1”, he said, “but I’ll have to wait until next year for that present”.
