The Glovers suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since the beginning of October after narrowly losing to promotion-chasing Carlisle United in a game of two halves at Brunton Park. 

Defender Shaun Brisley’s stunning 35-yard volley opened the scoring for the Cumbrians before Charlie Wyke’s header doubled their advantage.

Smith pulled one back for Town – just his third in the green and white – and believes the squad can achieve good things with regular steady displays.

He told YTFC’s official YouTube channel: “It wasn’t good enough. I know myself I should’ve done better but as a whole we didn’t do what we should have done.

“We had the chances. I had a second opportunity as well and if that goes in it’s a whole different game again. 

“If you were in and around the changing room, you’d know there is something special there. It’s up to us to bring it out on a consistent basis.”

Smith is not renown for his goalscoring attributes with just three Town strikes in 238 appearances for the club, over two spells.

However, the 29-year-old is becoming more of a threat in the opposition’s penalty area and has put it down to the extra work he puts in with assistant boss Terry Skiverton.

He said: “It’s all the work I’ve been doing with Terry Skiverton to be honest. 

“Constantly, everyday just doing extra bits of heading and eventually it’s paid off.

“As a defender, there’s a very limited time where you’re going to get in the box so you need to try and make the most of it.”
