After back-to-back home games, the Glovers open October on the road with a trip to Southend United on Saturday afternoon (3pm).

Having played well at Huish Park, Chris Hargreaves will be vying for his side to turn those performances into a bigger points haul starting at Roots Hall.

Saturday’s hosts Southend are in a similar situation to Town, sitting in mid table but producing performances which could see the side climb up the table.

Chris Hargreaves’ thoughts

The boss spoke to the press on Thursday afternoon to preview the trip to Southend. The full video can be watched below:

Team news

Hargreaves’ options have been bolstered by the return of Owen Bevan who is now available for selection following his international call-up with Wales Under-21’s.

Bevan, who made a substitute appearance in the Welsh youngsters’ 2-0 defeat to Austria, returned to training on Thursday afternoon and will be amongst the squad travelling to Southend.

One who certainly won’t be there though is Callum Rowe who continues his recovery from injury.

However, Sam Perry, who has been absent for a number of weeks due to a concussion is back in the fold.

A foot in the opposition camp

Rhys Murphy is the obvious name Yeovil Town fans look out for when the Glovers face Southend United. However, he is unlikely to line-up against Yeovil after an injury he sustained in January’s game between the two sides.

Southend United manager Kevin Maher is somebody his Hargreaves will know well with the two managers working together whilst at Bristol Rovers. Maher, who is a former Southend captain and youth coach returned to Roots Hall in October 2021 to become the main man on the Essex coastline.

Have we met before?

The two sides met in National League action for the first in January, a matter of days after the Glovers’ FA Cup clash with AFC Bournemouth. Southend were the 2-1 victors that evening, with Reuben Reid grabbing Town’s goal. In March, Yeovil Town were the 2-0 winners in Darren Sarll’s final game as Yeovil Town manager.

Prior to the earlier encounter, the two sides had not met since 2017 in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Southend, who were a League One club at the time were knocked out by League Two Yeovil through an Otis Khan penalty.
