Sowunmi has found first team opportunities hard to come by this season, last appearing back in August, and Way was quick to applaud the former Ipswich Town man’s professionalism.
“He took the opportunity very well,” he told YTFC’s official YouTube channel.
“I’ve tried to give everyone an opportunity and Omar’s came last night for how hard he’s worked.
“We know the strengths of Omar and he showed them so I was really pleased for him.”
Town have now scored 12 goals in three home matches in the Checkatrade Trophy and Way declared his satisfaction of his other forward’s getting on the scoresheet.
Otis Khan curled home a classy opener before Francois Zoko doubled the hosts’ advantage with a smart finish.
“We’ve been questioned about the lack of goals so I’m very pleased,” Way said.
“The way Otis took his goal was fantastic. I thought he played through the lines really well and was very positive, and Zokes looked back to his best.”
He added: “I trust this group 100%. Every week, whether it’s training or a match, every player is giving everything they possibly can to make this football club successful.”
The Checkatrade Trophy quarter-final draw will be made tomorrow (Thursday, January 12th) at 11.30am, live on Sky Sports News.
