With the Ashes in full swing it came as no surprise that the newly acquainted squad of Yeovil Town Football Club wanted to get in on the act.

On a gloriously sunny afternoon the lads took on Total Abuse Cricket Club, a team that included a certain Paul Sturrock.

The new Gaffer had become acquainted with the opposition during his time at Plymouth Argyle.

After a purely abusive toss up The Glovers won the toss and elected to bat with Chris Weale and Ryan Dickson opening for the football club.

After a tentative start Dickson blasted a beautiful four for the first boundary but sadly that was as good as got for Ryan as he was out next ball.

Matty Dolan was next in but his stay was also very short as he was bowled for just the one run.

Wealey in the meantime was plodding along on his way to an unbeaten twenty when he had to retire (Gaffer’s orders!) but new arrival Shaun Jeffers was looking good as he made his way to 14 before being caught.

Marc Laird and Stephen Arthurworry didn’t worry anybody as they both departed for ducks but the next two in, Jordan Gibbons and Omar Sowumni both made 23 before retiring but clearly Jamie Burrows didn’t play much cricket with Rangers as he departed for another duck.

Jacob Sokolik was next in with 4 followed by Artur Krysiak who showed that the Polish clearly have a long way to go in cricket terms.

Finally Nathan Smith came and went walking all over his stumps on the way. Well done Smithy!

But the final total of 126 was a fair score for a team still learning the game…that’s cricket we mean.

The Total Abuse reply was led by Luggy Sturrock, as he team mates seemed to call him. The gaffer strode out to the wicket, looking every bit the professional, and showed what he could do with the bat with a solid 18 before being caught and bowled.

We do not know who by as the PA went on the blink and the scorer was sleeping at the time.

Total Abuse’s Mills was next in and out for a duck but Aspinal did slightly better with nine, but clearly Total Abuse were way behind the run rate and it was looking good for the footballers.

Adams chipped in two before Darren Way, making a guest appearance for Abuse somehow managed 11 as he flung the bat at everything.

Next in was Sly, who put up a fierce resistance with 13 which left Terry Skiverton (another guest for Abuse) stranded on four as the overs ran out with Abuse way behind on 93.

So a really positive start for the very new look Glovers as the season approaches with supporters and players alike all looking forward to a winning start to the season.
