The Glovers began their cup campaign with an impressive victory at St James Park thanks to strikes from Sam Surridge – his first for the club – Rhys Browne and Otis Khan.
Town have now scored 13 goals in the opening six matches of the 2017/18 season, their most prolific start to an EFL campaign since 2012/13.
Speaking to iFollow Glovers after victory in Devon, Way said: “I thought we had four or five really good chances – Jake Gray and Sam Surridge in the first-half.
“We just said to them ‘it will come, we just have to make sure we keep our shape and stay organised’, but three or four of our breaks, as I said to you in our previous games, teams are struggling to live with that because we’ve been attacking fast.
“It’s pleasing for me to come into a derby game and score three very good goals and put on a performance like we did because knowing Paul like I do, he would’ve wanted to have won.”
Having surrendered a three goal lead at St James Park last season in League Two, Way was equally pleased to avoid a repeat experience this time around.
“We were in control of the game for large periods,” the Town boss said. “There was that little bit of anxiousness when their one goal went in and I don’t normally get a little bit edgy as a manager!
“But we certainly learnt from our previous experience to see that game out.”
