After picking up more points than any other team in the bottom six in the last five fixtures manager Gary Johnson is delighted with his players’ form.
The Glovers’ 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Huish Park at the weekend extended Yeovil’s unbeaten run to five matches, a run of form which Johnson believes has opened up the battle to avoid relegation.
“It was a super win,” said Johnson. “We had a lot of commitment out there and a lot of effort. Sheffield Wednesday were in a rich vein of form themselves so it’s nice to go five unbeaten – three draws, two wins – with another home game coming up again on Tuesday against Ipswich.
“It’s still very tight with all the other teams getting results as well – Charlton would’ve had a little bit of a heart-attack today with the results – but we’re certainly in there and we probably have dragged a few other teams in towards us so instead of four teams it’s probably six or seven now in the mire at the bottom.”
Last season in the English second tier 55 points were required to stave off relegation to League One, but Johnson believes that number will be much lower this season.
“It looked like you didn’t need 50 – even though 54 got you relegated last season – then we felt it wouldn’t take 50, and I still don’t think it will, but I think you need to get around the same number of points as games so around 46/47/48 points, that sort of thing.
“But it depends what other teams do, so you just have to worry about yourself and put a run of form together. It’s not about winning the odd game it’s about getting some form over a period of time and I’m pleased to say we’ve got that going.”
