Goals from Rhys Murphy and trialist Bradley Ash secured a narrow win over the Bulls as the green and whites continued their unbeaten start to pre-season.
Needing to demonstrate their physicality against the National League North outfit, Town’s boss was left full of praise.
“It was similar to the games we’re going to play in our new league,” he told YTTV. “It was quite realistic, had a good intensity and they did it properly which made it quite a confrontational affair.
“I’m really pleased how we stood up to it though and I like the early signs of fight that the team is showing and that’s all we want, that’s what the supporters want and that’s what the manager wants, a team that sticks together and shows some fight and pride in their football club and I like that.
“On occasion it went a tad too far, but I’d rather they had that in them and we have to rein them in than them never being able to have it and go down without a fight so I thought for that purpose, for the team bonding and the cohesive part of that element, it was a good test.”
The successful trip to Devon built on the opening friendly win over Stratford Town as Murphy’s brace earnt a 2-0 win.
With two wins from two, Sarll has been left pleased with the winning mentality displayed in the build-up to the 2019/20 campaign.
“I know what we’ve signed and the characters of the players we’ve signed, but I think the one that surprised me, the winner in him, was Rhys Murphy. He’s a real ferocious winner and sometimes winners take different shapes and different forms but I thought Murphy’s leadership and presence was outstanding.
“I thought Alcock did better at that and was much more influential with his voice and Nelson is Nelson, he does most of my job for me on the pitch.
“Dickinson prepares for these games likes it’s the biggest game of his life and I like the early signs. It doesn’t mean it’s a given and will be there week in, week out, but I’ve been in so many dressing rooms where there isn’t that and only a few where there is, and the few in the minority normally win.”
