MATCH PREVIEW | Yeovil Town – Forest Green Rovers

Yeovil Town’s pre-season campaign continues with a clash against Forest Green Rovers (3pm).

In what is the first pre-season friendly at Huish Park, Darren Sarll’s side will be hoping to continue their winning start to pre-season against Football League opposition.

The visitors, after falling in the League Two play-offs, are vying for promotion to League One once again, and play their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, a week before their season begins against newly promoted Sutton United.

Darren Sarll’s thoughts

Speaking after last Saturday’s victory over Stratford Town, Darren Sarll said; ““We need to get the flow right between (Dale) Gorman and (Josh) Staunton but Gorman, I like it when he takes responsibility and even in those moments where you think we may lose control of the mental and physical dominance of it, I just think that Gorman almost brings power back into your ranks, so I thought he was very influential at that.

“(Charlie) Wakefield again I thought was good, he’s had a good couple of weeks, and we need to build him, he had a long period of his young career out with injury, but I thought he showed some really good physical attributes, putting in a brilliant cross for Joe (Quigley).

“Lewis Simper’s got good quality, you can see the way he feels the ball and shapes the ball and spins it off the sides of his feet, I thought he was good.”

A foot in the opposition camp

It’s been a summer of change at the New Lawn, with head coach Rob Edwards taking the helm following Mark Cooper’s departure.

The change has brought about opportunities for the likes of Matty Stevens, who has impressed in recent friendlies, scoring four times, most recently against Swansea City.

Previous meetings

Saturday’s fixture is the first time the Glovers have met Forest Green outside the EFL since 2003.

Yeovil Town were the victors that day, winning 1-0 with Kirk Jackson netting the game’s solitary goal.

Kit news

Yeovil Town will be wearing the brand-new Hummel shirt, launched on Wednesday evening.

Fans will be able to pre-order the shirt in the coming days.

Admission prices are as follows;

Under 11 – free (with an accompanying adult)

Getting there:

By Car:

There is no parking for supporters within the ground, although parking is available in the rugby ground, which is just inside the main entrance – stewards will direct you.

From outside of Kent, find your way to the M25, then take the M2/A2 (following the signs to Canterbury, then from Canterbury follow signs to Dover) as far as the Whitfield roundabout (there is a McDonald’s Drive-Thru on the left).

Take the fourth exit at this roundabout, down Whitfield Hill. At the bottom of the hill turn left at the roundabout and follow this road until the first set of traffic lights. At the lights turn right (180 degrees down the hill) and follow the road under the railway bridge, the ground is a little further up the road on the left.

If you have to take the M20/A20 leave the A20 in Folkestone (the exit immediately after the tunnel through the hill) and travel through the Alkham Valley (turn left at the roundabout at the end of the slip-road and then left again, following the signs for Alkham) which will eventually take you near Kearsney train station (turn right into Lower Road just before the railway bridge, before you get to the station).

By train:

The main railway station in Dover is Dover Priory which is approximately 2 miles from Crabble. The closest station to Crabble is Kearsney which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the ground.

Kearsney is the last stop before Dover Priory on the line from London Victoria (via Canterbury). Some trains on this line do not stop between Canterbury East and Dover Priory so if you are planning on getting off at Kearsney make sure that the train you are travelling on is a stopping service.

If you are travelling on the line from London Charring Cross (via Ashford) the train will not pass through Kearsney so you will have to stop at Dover Priory, near the town centre.

If you get off at Kearsney, turn right as you leave the station, go under the railway bridge and then take the first road on the left (Lower Road). Follow Lower Road all the way along, past a pond on your right and Crabble Corn Mill on your left. At the end you will see the Cricketers pub on the other side of the road. Turn right and you should see the entrance to the ground. If you get off at Dover Priory it is probably best to get a bus or taxi to the ground as it is a long walk

After a pitch inspection, the referee determined that the match would be unplayable in the current conditions.

Tickets from the postponed fixture remain valid, with refunds available from the ticket office until 5pm Monday.

FIXTURE NEWS | Chesterfield match rearranged

Full ticket details will be confimed in due course, with previously purchased tickets remaining valid.

NEWS | Town sign Armed Forces Covenant

By signing the Covenant, the club has made a commitment to support the country’s servicemen and women wherever and however it can and to ensure no member of the Armed Forces should suffer any disadvantage as a result of their service.

YTFC recognises the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to the business and will seek to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, by:

  • Promoting the fact that we are an armed forces-friendly organisation
  • Endeavouring to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for Service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment;
  • Seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces, including by accommodating their training and deployment where possible;
  • Aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day;
  • Offering a discount to members of the Armed Forces Community at the club’s discretion.

The Covenant was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Defence by Commander Jamieson-Stride, Commanding Officer of 815 Naval Air Squadron at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton and on behalf of YTFC by Chairman, John Fry.

Marking the occasion, the club is also offered Tickets For Troops, with servicemen or women with a valid ID also able to enjoy 10% off in the club store.

Commenting on YTFC’s Covenant signing, Chief Operating Officer, David Mills, said: “We are absolutely delighted to sign this covenant.

“Many of the club’s fans are members of the military community and it is only right that we show our support for them and their service in this way.

“We already have strong links with our colleagues in the military and their families but we hope that signing this covenant will be the start of an even stronger bond.”

FIXTURE | Back the Young Glovers on Saturday

Taking on South West rivals Exeter City, the Young Glovers will be looking to build on their 4-0 win over Newport County last time out.

Sitting third in the table and just three points off of second-placed AFC Bournemouth, Terry Moore’s side will look for maximum points against the Grecians.

At the start of October the two sides drew 1-1 thanks to Neville Nzembela’s strike with the green and whites now looking to make home advantage count.

With the first-team at home on Saturday afternoon, make it a doubleheader by supporting the Under-18s on the top pitch at Huish Park.

REPORT | Young Glovers have Somerset Premier Cup campaign ended

Making the short trip to Playing Fields, Terry Moore’s side targeted a repeat performance from the First Round.

Facing Bishop Sutton at the start of October the Young Glovers ran out 4-0 victors to set up the Second Round tie with Shepton.

Unable to call upon a host of players due to injury and first-team involvement, a number of Under-16s featured in the cup clash.

After a well-battled opening half an hour, Town fell behind on 36 minutes as the break approached.

Kailan Gould, who had threatened before, lobbed a shot over Kacper Kowalczyk to give the hosts the lead at the halfway stage.

Needing a bright start to the second half the green and whites were dealt a blow seven minutes after the restart when Francois Callen doubled Shepton Mallet’s lead with a neat finish.

Continuing to search for a way back into the match the Glovers produced some neat play against their senior opponents, but committing numbers forward Mallet added a third late on through James Billing to round off the scoring.

Now looking to continue their impressive EFL Youth Alliance campaign, the Under-18s host Exeter City on Saturday (11am) at Huish Park with supporters encouraged to back the Young Glovers.

NEWS | Glovers to support LGBT equality against Port Vale

The corner flags are part of a range of activities the EFL are undertaking as part of the campaign which runs from November 23rd to December 1st

EFL clubs, including Yeovil, have been provided with rainbow boot-laces, captain’s armbands and programme adverts, all of which are on display at Huish Park tonight.

The EFL will change its logo to a bespoke rainbow coloured version for the campaign and has also created a series of short films to help share the stories of LGBT fans in the game.

Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign is in support of LGBT equality with a key theme for this year focused on creating more allies to LGBT people in sport.

The EFL’s support for Rainbow Laces forms part of its wider LGBT work delivered in conjunction with Clubs through the Equality Code of Practice. This includes delivering activities, setting policies, and advising on recruitment and education at Clubs.

POSTPONED | International duty sees Lincoln clash called off

Three of Darren Way’s squad have received international call-ups meaning that in compliance with EFL regulations, the two clubs have agreed to rearrange the fixture due to the number of forced absentees for the green & whites.

Both clubs will now work with the EFL to pick a date for the rearranged fixture whilst tickets already purchased by supporters will remain valid.

Refunds are available via the ticket office prior to the day of the rearranged fixture.

If supporters have any queries, please contact the ticket office on 01935 847888.

FIXTURE | Under-18s in top of the table clash

The Young Glovers sit top of the table after nine games with 20 points to their name, one point ahead of Saturday’s opponents.

The U’s have two games in hand on the green and whites but a victory for Town would see them extend their lead at the top of the EFL Youth Alliance South West table.

Admission is free with the match taking place at 11am on the top pitch at Huish Park, with all welcome to attend.

The league table and results can bd viewed on our Academy page.

POSTPONED | Trip to Cheltenham cancelled

Three of Town’s squad have been called up to represent their respective countries later this month and in compliance with EFL regulations, the two clubs have agreed to rearrange the fixture due to the number of forced absentees for the green & whites.

The match at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium will be rearranged with both clubs working with the EFL to confirm a new date.

Any tickets bought in advance will remain valid for the rearranged encounter with refunds also available via the Huish Park ticket office by calling 01935 847888.

NEWS | Support Marrow 4 Marley at Newport

Opening from 1.30pm, the station for Town fans will be located in Rodney’s Bar (the dedicated bar for away fans) and will be open through until kick-off.

The process of signing up as a donor will take less than five minutes and the swabbing will take just seconds.  That’s just five minutes to find out if you can save a special little boy’s life.

Marrow for Marley is a campaign set up in aid of six-year old Marley Nicholls who has recently been diagnosed with a rare condition called Aplastic Anaemia. The disease only affects around 1 in 40 children in the UK and without a bone marrow transplant, the condition will be fatal within a few years.

Marley is a very special, fun-loving little boy and has captured the hearts of everyone who’s been touched by his story. This is obvious from the fact people have flocked in their thousands to be swabbed in the hope that they are a potential donor.

On Saturday, Marrow for Marley will be welcoming anyone aged 17-55 to be tested to see if they are Marley’s match (please note that people with certain autoimmune and blood diseases are not able to be donors – information about this can be found online).

Marley and younger brother George will be joining the Club as special guests on Saturday and will be walking out with the team.

The Glovers will also be donating a signed Gary Warren shirt to Marley and his family on the day to be auctioned off to support their campaign.

To find out more about Marley and to follow the progress of the campaign follow Marrow for Marley on Facebook and Twitter.

Please note, anyone who registers to become a bone marrow donor will have their details stored on a worldwide database for 30 years.

FIXTURE | Guide to the newcomers

Bury

The Shakers suffered a season to forget in 2017/18, finishing rock bottom of League One to suffer relegation to the fourth tier for the second time in five years.

Struggling towards the bottom of the league for much of the season, Bury’s relegation was confirmed with four games remaining.

Player-manager Ryan Lowe is still in charge after taking over in January and will be looking to mastermind a return to League One with experienced players such as Stephen Dawson, Neill Danns and Jermaine Beckford on their books.

The Glovers meet Bury on the opening day of the season, in what will be the first meeting between the two sides since April 2013.

Macclesfield Town

After six years away from the EFL, the Silkmen earned promotion back to League Two in style by claiming the Vanarama National League title.

Finishing 10 points ahead of Tranmere Rovers, Macclesfield defied the odds to finish with a final points tally of 92 after being tipped for relegation at the start of the campaign.

Top scorer Scott Wilson will be looking to continue his scoring streak after netting 14 goals in 2017/18, in what will be his first taste of EFL action.

Experienced manager Mark Yates has taken charge at Moss Rose after John Askey departed for Shrewsbury following promotion.

Yeovil welcome Macclesfield on March 16th.

MK Dons

Another of the relegated quartet from League One, the Dons return to the fourth tier after just two seasons.

The Glovers most recently played the Buckinghamshire outfit during the 2016/17 season, when Darren Way’s side ran out comfortable 4-1 victors in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Now ready to meet for the first time in the league since 2015, MK Dons will be looking to rebuild after finishing 23rd in League One last season.

The club’s relegation saw the departure of manager Dan Micciche, with Paul Tisdale appointed his successor after 12 seasons in charge of Exeter City.

Town head to Stadium:MK towards the end of March.

Northampton Town

Suffering relegation in 2017/18, the Cobblers are back in the League Two for the first time in three seasons.

The Northamptonshire outfit looked to have pulled clear of the drop zone in January when they rose as high as 18th, but a slump in the final few months saw them finish up a lowly 22nd after a winless nine-game run.

After initially taking caretaker charge, Dean Austin was given the job on a permanent basis last month and will be tasked with overseeing a swift return to League One.

Key to that will be midfielder John-Joe O’Toole who has 30 goals to his name in 140 appearances for Town.

Darren Way’s side make the trip to the PTS Academy Stadium for the penultimate game of the season.

Oldham Athletic

The final of the four relegated teams, the Latics suffered relegation on the final game of the 2017/18 season after a valiant effort to beat the drop.

A disastrous start to the campaign saw them lose seven of the first 10 matches, a disappointing run of form which they couldn’t overturn come May.

Oldham have spent the last 21 seasons in League One, so will have to adjust to life back in the fourth tier.

Former striker Frankie Bunn was appointed manager as recently as last week, taking over from Richie Wellens who departed Boundary Park at the beginning of the month.

Town host Oldham in their first midweek match of the season on Tuesday August 21st.

Tranmere Rovers

Earning promotion back to the EFL via the Vanarama National League play-offs, Tranmere saw off Boreham Wood 2-1 at Wembley in the play-off final.

After three seasons in non-league, the Merseyside club return to League Two after a rollercoaster campaign in 2017/18.

Three wins from their first 12 games saw them languishing in their lowest ever league position of 18th, before an incredible run of form – which included a club record nine consecutive home league wins – earnt the Super White Army a spot in the play-offs.

With a win percentage of over 50% since taking over in 2016, manager Micky Mellon will be hoping for their end of season form to continue in 2018/19.

October will be the first time the two sides have met since 2013.

FIXTURE | Villa tie selected for TV coverage

Taking place on Tuesday 14th August (7.45pm), the Round One clash has been selected for television coverage in what will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides.

Steve Bruce’s Championship outfit will head to Somerset after narrowly missing out on promotion back to the Premier League last season, suffering narrow defeat to Fulham in the play-off final at Wembley.

For Darren Way’s side, it will mark the second season in succession where the Glovers have faced second tier opposition in Round One, after facing Wolves at the same stage in 2017/18.

Ticket prices will be confirmed in due course.
