The majority of the Town boss’ squad are either loans returning to their parent club at the end of the campaign or players out of contract in the summer.

Way is determined to keep a number of his current crop and will also be working hard with the board to improve his side’s strength in depth.

He told YTFC.net: “I’ve only got three players in contract so it’s important the assets we’ve brought to the football club remain here and we build again next year.

“Success and failure aren’t far apart. We’ve had 16 draws this year and I look at our strength in depth, which we need to add to next year. Gavin Massey scored for Leyton Orient – he’s well out of our budget. 

“Exeter bring on Reuben Reid and (David) Wheeler. I tried to get Reuben Reid in January but unfortunately couldn’t get anywhere near his wages. We play against Cambridge and they bring on Barry Corr. 

“I have to make sure we improve our strength in depth and keep the current group we’ve got who I think are good assets to the football club.”

Way continued: “There’s so many things to look at. Wages, longevity – do you offer players who are coming to the end of their careers two or three years? 

“The football club, certainly from the Championship, has taken a big hit – not just on the field, but off it as well. 

“We’ve lost some players and never really regrouped and gone on again. 

“It’s not easy for any football club in League Two to compete every week. So far I’ve seen my time as a success and I want to build on that.”

During his tenure, Way has brought in several youngsters on loan to aid his cause.

The 37-year-old has brought in nine players on temporary deals this season and hopes to utilise the loan system again in the future.

“This club provides loan players an opportunity to be successful,” he said.

“My frustration is like (Harry) Cornick and (Connor) Roberts, you get them to a stage where they’ve developed but then lose them at a critical moment where I feel the club can push on. 

“Hopefully with the players we’ve brought in this year, there will be one or two managers that can do us favours next year.”
