The 36-year-old arrives having most recently been with Sky Bet League One outfit Gillingham, where he made over 220 appearances.

Spending more than a decade in the EFL, Nelson has also enjoyed spells with Brentford, Leyton Orient, Norwich City and Notts County, as well as a stint north of the border with Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League.

Arriving to bolster Town’s goalkeeping options with Artur Krysiak ruled out for the remainder of the season, the Stroud-born stopper will challenge Jonny Maddison for a starting spot.

Nelson is available for Saturday’s league meeting with Carlisle United at Huish Park and has chosen squad number 25.
