Looking to apply pressure on the top two with back-to-back wins, the Young Glovers got off to a bright start and almost took the lead with just three minutes on the clock.

George Calverley’s run took him to the edge of the box and with the chance to shoot, but his low drive flew just wide of the post with the visiting ‘keeper scrambling.

Looking like another positive performance Town were dealt a blow just sixty seconds later when Exeter took the lead with their first shot on goal.

A trialist playing up front for the Devon outfit picked out the bottom corner with a low strike from 20 yards, with a second following just minutes later with seven minutes on the clock.

Kacper Kowalczyk did well to save an initial shot from inside the box but could do nothing about James Dodd converting on the rebound to confirm a nightmare start for the hosts.

Struggling to get going Terry Moore’s side searched for a way back into the game but fell further behind on 18 minutes.

Lewis Dix stooped low at the back post to head clear but the loose ball was pounced on once again by Dodd to double his tally for the afternoon.

In a more than commanding position, the Grecians put the game beyond doubt before half-time.

A whipped in corner pinged around the box before Cheick Diabate powered into the back of the net to confirm a resounding scoreline at the break.

Looking stronger at the back in the second half following the introduction of Tom Hayes the Glovers searched for a consolation at least.

Dix saw a strike from range flash just wide, in what proved to be Town’s best chance of the game.

Unable to mount a dramatic comeback it was defeat for the green and whites, who next travel to Oxford United on Saturday.
