The Glovers struck the woodwork twice and had a goal ruled out for offside in a game which largely favoured the hosts, only for Chairboys substitute Randell Williams to steal all three points late on. 

Securing a vital win for the promotion chasers, Town boss Way was left to hail his side’s performance despite the result. 

Speaking to iFollow Glovers, he said: “Football can sometimes be a cruel game, and when you look at the overall performance from the players I think they had one shot in the game and it went in.

“I have to make sure that the players grow belief from that performance, even though we lost.

“I thought the supporters stuck with us but again we didn’t get what we deserved. It’s disappointing, but at the same time I’m proud of my players for the effort that they’ve put in.”

Looking to finish the campaign on a high, the Green & Whites suffered just their second defeat in six on Saturday. 

With 13 players contracted for next season, Way is looking for a positive 2018/19 campaign. 

“They (Wycombe) block and they tackle – that’s what I’ve said to my players, that people are making up things in this game that don’t exist. 

“We need to bring in one or two more to add to the young talent that we’ve got at this football club, and I know the pressure is on for these players to perform and to get us in the top six next year, and that is what you need.”
