YEOVIL 2 SWINDON 1
Josh Wilde reporting
Yeovil beat League One side Swindon 2-1 at Huish Park to complete an encouraging pre-season schedule. Tom Eaves and Otis Khan scored for the Glovers, while Jon Obika was on the scoresheet for the away side.
For Yeovil’s final pre-season friendly before next Saturday’s curtain raiser against Notts County, Darren Way kept faith with the team that beat Salisbury 3-2 on Tuesday. The substitutes bench featured four trialists, along with contracted players Josh Ezewele, Joe Lea, Ollie Bassett and Omar Sowunmi.
Yeovil starting team: (4-3-3) Krysiak; Dickson, Lacey, Smith, Shephard; Dolan, Lawless, Dawson; Khan, Eaves, Hedges.
The Glovers started brightly and Khan came close to giving Yeovil an early lead when he found himself free of the Swindon backline but saw his shot well smothered by Robins goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.
On 15 minutes, Matt Dolan’s direct free-kick was palmed away by the diving Vigouroux. From the resulting short corner, a well worked move saw Ryan Hedges cross for strike partner Eaves to head home.
Yeovil were only ahead for a couple of minutes though as former Glover Obika found space in the area to fire past Artur Krysiak.
Khan was looking lively in a green and white shirt and had two chances in as many minutes: first shooting straight at Vigouroux after a mazy run, before powerfully firing a second effort wide of the left hand post.
The Glovers high pressuring strategy, a feature of their pre-season matches, was forcing Swindon into mistakes. Yeovil nearly profited on 33 minutes when an error at the back saw Kevin Dawson flash a shot wide of goal.
Just before the break, Yeovil had a great chance to regain the lead; Eaves was released down the left-hand side and despite having his shirt pulled, the frontman still managed to pick out the unmarked Hedges, whose effort one-on-one was well blocked by the advancing Vigouroux.
The two teams entered the tunnel level at half-time, with the Glovers arguably having been the better side.
The two teams emerged for the second period with neither manager electing to make changes at the interval.
Yaser Kasim had the first effort of note on 55 minutes as he fired a free-kick narrowly over from a similar position to the one Dolan had in the first-half.
With just under twenty minutes to go, Swindon made a host of changes. Five players, including substitute goalkeeper Will Henry, came on for Luke Williams’ side. Henry’s first action was to pick the ball out of his own net as another good move between the Glovers’ front three saw Eaves cross eventually find
the unmarked Khan to fire home.
