Beginning his career as a trainee at Blackburn Rovers, the forward made two appearances for the first team, both coming in the League Cup.

A succession of loans quickly followed with spells at Crewe, Oldham and Halifax, but it was his time with Swansea City where Richards really found his feet. Scoring seven goals in 17 appearances as his goals helped Swansea stay afloat in the old Third Division.

Richards then moved on from Blackburn to secure a permanent move to Northampton Town, the first of two spells there during his career. After hitting 11 goals in his first season, the forward was then loaned to Rochdale and ultimately sold to Barnsley.

Barnsley saw Richards secure the first promotion of his career, after winning the League One play-offs, the forward enjoyed a season of Championship football where he scored on six occasions.

Then followed a move to Port Vale in 2007, where the forward really hit a hot-streak, 75 goals in 202 games saw the forward become a fans favourite at Vale Park.

Success continued elsewhere as Richards secured promotion for the second time in his career, this time with Chesterfield, winning League Two during the 13/14 season.

Just two years later, Richards would win League Two again during his second spell with Northampton Town as his 15 league goals fired them to the title under the management of Chris Wilder.

After two years with Swindon and starting the season with Cambridge, 37-year old Richards now moves to Somerset, targeting a return to the Football League.
