Byron Webster put the Glovers into a first half lead after Shakers midfielder Zac Thompson was shown a straight red for a two footed lunge on Keanu Marsh-Brown.

But a poor Bury side levelled with twenty minutes left through Dominic Poleon before Sam Foley grabbed the winner four minutes later to give Gary Johnson’s men all three points.

The win leaves his side in fourteenth place ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Shrewsbury but with the momentum of three wins in the last four games behind them.

The boss made three changes to the side that triumphed in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Torquay on Tuesday night. Cup-tied Paddy Madden and suspended Joe Edwards came back in along with defender Byron Webster with the unlucky trio being Richard Hinds, Dominic Blizzard and Reuben Reid, all dropping to the bench.

Yeovil started by far the brighter against a Bury side that hadn’t won in the league all season despite bringing in new manager Kevin Blackwell four games ago. His side looked short of confidence and provided a combative, often overly physical opposition to the hosts and it took just six minutes for the Shakers to clock up their first yellow card when full back Matt Doherty brought the speedy Madden down from behind.

Ed Upson hit the free kick just wide and Madden was denied by a defender’s clearance on ten minutes as Yeovil opened well but Marek Stech had to be smart to get down to deny Leeds loanee Poleon. Keanu Marsh-Brown, scorer of the deciding penalty on Tuesday night at Torquay, whistled a shot just over and James Hayter couldn’t make a strong connection to Sam Foley’s back post cross and keeper Trevor Carson pushed it around for a corner.

In the space of five minutes, the game swung round in Yeovil’s favour with a red card and a goal. First up, Zac Thompson was shown a straight red for a two footed lunge on Marsh-Brown with the ensuing melee seeing Doherty lucky not to follow his team mate for an early bath when he raised his arms aggressively at a Yeovil

player.

Minutes later and Yeovil made their man advantage count when a corner to the back post was dropped by Carson and Doherty’s clearance cannoned off Byron Webster and into the net. Carson complained about being fouled in the build up but there was no contact at all and the keeper had himself to blame for a cheap goal to concede. The rest of the half saw the two differing styles collide regularly but with no further chances.

After the interval, Marsh-Brown hobbled off to be replaced by Gavin Williams; the Welshman swapping wings with Foley and going to a left sided position. Foley and Madden both went close while Stech dropped onto a shot by Mark Hughes from close range.

Madden then hit a shot a foot over with his left foot from outside the penalty box and Stech dived full length to push a Mark Carrington header away for a corner.

With fifteen minutes to go, Yeovil grabbed what would turn out to be the winner. Ed Upson’s corner was bundled in from close range by Sam Foley for his fourth goal of the season. Upson and Madden then both went close late on while Doherty wasted a golden opportunity to level matters but headed at Stech in stoppage time when in space.

From the flag kick though, Steven Schumacher’s cross fell to Dominic Poleon and he turned and lashed the ball into the roof of the net.
