Yeovil Town fans are going to have to put their planning for Brazil 2014 on hold this weekend as the domestic calendar is back in full swing and the Glovers have another big home game to plan for.
Yeovil host Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday at Huish Park, with a usual 3pm kick off.
The Glovers haven’t been enjoying the international break sat on a beach somewhere or watching England in a bar, they have played two fixtures against local sides to make sure the squad has no rustiness.
Firstly, an 8-0 drubbing of Radstock Town in the Somerset Premier Cup got the ball rolling and provided some much needed confidence to the strikers as the goals were shared about.
Paddy Madden scored twice, as did Kieffer Moore (one of Moore’s brace could well have been Paddy’s, only they know for sure!), Seth Nana, Kev Dawson, Sam Hoskins and Andy Williams all got in on the act as well.
Yeovil’s emphatic win secured a second round tie against Somerset cup holders Weston Super Mare; stay tuned to YTFC.net for ticketing and date details for this game.
More recently, the squad also helped open the new floodlight facilities at Wincanton FC, another local side and another 8-0 win. More goals for the strikers and another clean sheet for the defenders.
During the friendly, Liam Fontaine made his return from injury notching the first goal in the process. Seven other players scored in the game including Joel Grant, Madden, Williams, Hoskins, Moore, Dawson and the one journeyman who crops up everywhere “A Trialist”.
A couple of notable absentees from the two fixtures were the club’s two current internationals, both Wayne Hennessey and Shane Duffy played twice for their international sides over the course of the past week.
Hennessey in particular shone during Wales’ 1-1 with Belgium while Duffy continued to captain the Irish under 21 squad.
The Glovers have added to their ranks with the signing of Wigan Athletic midfielder Fraser Fyvie. More on his signing here.
Moving on to Saturday’s opponents and Brighton are potentially bringing a couple of well-known faces to Huish Park.
Vitalij Maksimenko is a member of the playing staff at the Amex Stadium, but he has been short of playing time this season. The Latvian was a second half substitute at Wembley in May at the end of a short loan spell at Yeovil.
But fans will welcome back Assistant Manager Nathan Jones with some of the fondest memories. Jones was a Glover between 2005 and 2012 playing over 200 times in green and white. He led the side out at Wembley in 2007 and excited the crowd with his fancy footwork and leadership.
He took up a role on the management team alongside Terry Skiverton before making a move into full time coaching with Charlton and then Brighton. He is now assistant to Oscar Garcia at the Amex.
Garcia has been active in the loan market this week, signing Leroy Lita from Swansea; Lita is available to make his debut against Yeovil. Lita has been brought in to help boost the attacking options as Leo Ulloa will be missing for a couple months with a broken foot.
In terms of league form, Brighton and Yeovil are currently bemoaning a similar run of results, each side have lost two of their last three and only drawn one.
Brighton sit in 15th place in the league having failed to get a win since a 3-1 win over Bolton in September. The Glovers will be hoping for a positive result to get out of the bottom three.
The sides have met before, back in Brighton’s days at the Withdean Stadium and the seagulls have probably got the recent upper hand on Saturday’s hosts.
The last Yeovil victory in this fixture was back in 2007, Gary Dempsey and Zoltan Steiber scoring in a 2-1 win.
Since then, it’s been a steady stream of Brighton wins, with a couple of draws the only results preventing a whitewash.
Brighton have won 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 once more in the last three encounters, they also have a 5-0 thrashing of Russell Slade’s Yeovil in 2009 to their name.
Brighton and Hove Albion’s players and staff will be wearing black armbands during the game to mark their respect at the passing of Brighton fan, Lance Corporal James Brynin who suffered a fatal gunshot wound in Afghanistan during the week.
Brighton’s away terrace is sold out and home ends are selling well which will hopefully ensure another fantastic atmosphere. But there is still time to get your ticket and secure your place at this all important Sky Bet Championship fixture.
You can call the ticket office on 01935 847888, go to YTFC.net to purchase online or come down to Huish Park and see one of our friendly ticket office staff.
