When the fixture lists were released, Yeovil fans could have been forgiven for looking for this Saturday’s fixture as early as possible.
QPR at home could well be the most mouth-watering tie of the Championship season, as the hoops bring their star studded line up (and dugout) to Huish Park.
Harry Redknapp’s men come to Somerset sat top of the Championship following their 0-0 draw with Brighton on Wednesday night.
Alongside Redknapp will be his usual team of Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond as well as former England Manager Steve McClaren.
Of course, Yeovil have their own national management experience – Gary Johnson took charge of Latvia for two years.
As a statistic to show just how far Yeovil have come, the two side’s latest squad lists have vastly different amounts of international caps to their name.
QPR started with no fewer than 169 full caps in their squad of 18 on Wednesday (Not including the further 162 available from Julio Cesar, Niko Kranjcar and Andy Johnson who missed out). By the time you tot up the others available to Redknapp and co, it comes to a total of 339.
Yeovil’s entire squad, have just 40 – 38 of which come from on loan goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. (Madden and McCallister have one each)
Interestingly, at the time of writing, the QPR game is Wayne Hennessey’s final one of his initial loan spell; it’ll be up to Gary Johnson if the Wolves loanee has his deal extended for the trip to Bolton and beyond.
It also represents the second game of three that Byron Webster will miss out on through suspension; his sending off against Sheffield Wednesday ensures he will sit in the stands again.
The other known absentees from the Glovers squad will be the same names as before, Paddy Madden is now back into light training, but could still be a couple of weeks away from action and Marek Stech has had a much lighter cast fitted to his broken hand.
Stech is training with the physios but has mentioned he has been doing some sessions with the other keepers – just nothing that involves the use of his hands!
In the QPR treatment room, Junior Hoilett was substituted in the first half against Birmingham at the weekend and missed out altogether as a result in midweek.
The other player who could be a doubt for the Huish Park clash is Nedum Onuoha who was replaced in the 23rd minute with a hamstring injury on Wednesday.
The visitors come into the game in decent form; their midweek draw was only the second time this season they have only failed to gain maximum points, a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield being the other occasion.
Despite their recent status in the top flight, the two sides have met competitively as recently as 2001.
The LDV Vans Trophy paired the sides together and a Chris Giles brace together with a Kim Grant goal made sure it was the Glovers who progressed.
Prior to that, an FA Cup game in 1988 saw the same result, just for the Londoners this time – making it one win each in the history books.
But the history, just like the previous form, counts for nothing as – to rattle out an old cliché – it is 11 v 11 on the day and anything can happen.
Tickets are available for the game but at the time of writing they are few and far between, the advice is to contact the ticket office as soon as possible if you are interested in coming along to Huish Park this Saturday as the game could be a complete sell-out.
A victory for the Glovers would not only bust many weekend betting accumulators, but all those international caps, all those big names will mean nothing if “little old” Yeovil Town write the most brilliant chapter of their Championship story, so far.
So to those of you who are coming, wear your green and white, sing your hearts out and give Gary, Terry, Darren and the squad the momentum they need to battle the big boys.
