The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international moved to the Glovers a day prior to the Emirates FA Cup win over Bradford City, playing a few minutes before completing the match against Forest Green Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy.

This weekend sees Whelan come up league opposition in Port Vale for the first time and the versatile defender is relishing his opportunity to impress.

“I was lucky enough to come at a good time where the games are coming thick and fast,” he told iFollow Glovers.

“I arrived on the Friday, went to ground to meet the manager and we went through what he expects and way he runs things which was very positive.

“He put a powerpoint up and I got to grips with things straight away. The game on Saturday (against Bradford) and I got a few minutes which I enjoyed and then I got 90 minutes in the Checkatrade Trophy.

“Everything seemed positive and I’m intrigued to see the challenges are at this great football club.”

Whelan continued: “Playing Under-23s football for a number of years has become quite repetitive.

“I’ve come to test myself against experienced players and in an experienced dressing room as well because there are some older lads who have been doing this for a number of years.

“I’m going to try and learn, and take things off them.

“Playing senior football is a challenge I’ve wanted for a long time. I’m just happy to be here and I want to do all I can to make this football club succeed for the rest of the season.”
