MATCH REPORT | Yeovil Town U18 0-3 Plymouth Argyle U18

Young Glovers fall to Argyle in first Merit League loss.

21 April 2021

Yeovil fail to take first half chances as Argyle hold firm to take a deserved three points.

With both teams looking for the win after respective drawn games at the weekend, you could be forgiven for thinking it might take a little time for this game to get started. Far from it.

Under sunny skies at Alvington, Argyle were quickly into their stride, displaying a familiar high press and intensity giving the home side little time to dwell on the ball. The early goal came in the 12th minute when a cross from the right was headed into the bottom corner, 0-1.

Yeovil will be left to rue key moments in a brief dominant spell during the first half when Andrews created two golden opportunities. The first, an interception and pass, sent Lloyd on his way but the keeper forced him wide and the young striker could only find the side netting. Shortly after, Andrews put Lloyd through on goal once more, but the in-form striker saw his tame shot easily saved.

Argyle continued to play with a confidence and swagger, forcing a flurry of corners and goal threats which the home defence did well to repel. But it was Yeovil who next fashioned a great opportunity when Hughes and Lloyd produced some nice interplay on the right before Hughes sent his drive narrowly wide.

On the half hour mark Dragos Ojog produced an excellent save to keep the visitors at bay with Corrbridge bravely blocking the follow up, before the defensive line took a further hit when Lye was forced to exit the game due to a shoulder injury. Young Brito came on in his place. Talismanic midfielder Stephens tried to wrestle back the initiative for the Glovers, embarking on several trademark driving runs and seeing a chance head over the bar. But as the half drew to a close it was Argyle who extended their lead, when the young striker was allowed to get his head on a cross which rolled into the net, 0-2.

The Young Glovers set out to reduce the deficit early on, but the streetwise defence of Argyle held firm and any Yeovil advances were quickly snuffed out. Argyle, always quick on the counter, got their third on the hour mark when the speedy striker put away his chance following a rebound, 0-3.

During the final quarter Hughes picked up a yellow for a late challenge before Hunter came on for his debut to try and salvage something from the game. Lloyd operating down the channels in the final minutes created a chance for Hunter but the young striker couldn’t find his feet and the chance was gone.  Stephens continued to drive the team forward in search of a consolation goal, but amidst a series of late scuffles, with both sides committed to the cause, Hughes saw red and the visitors closed out the match.

With two games to go in this competitive league Yeovil still have time to turn things around. The next fixture is away to Newport on 8th May.
