ACADEMY | Duo receive international call-up

Young Glovers called up by Wales

20 February 2019

Yeovil Town Academy is thrilled to announce two of its players have received international call-ups for the Regional Wales Squad.

Jack McGivney (Under-12s) and Ryan Griffiths (Under-13s) have both been selected to represent Wales at their respective age groups with the first training camp taking place in Newport across the 26th and 27th of this month, with further camps in April, July and August.

Part of the Academy since U10 level, Jack is looking forward to his first taste of international football:

“I’m really excited and I hope I do well there, I’ll just try to perform as best as I can. I’m a bit nervous but I’m really looking forward to it.

“My grandma and great grandma are Welsh so they’re both really proud.”

For Ryan, who joined the U13s after a prolific trial, it adds to a whirlwind start to 2019.

Snapped up from Wiltshire Regional Talent Centre in January, the striker will now have the chance to represent his country.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m grateful I’ve been chosen for it and I can’t wait.

“I’ve been following Wales with my dad since the age of four and was even at the Euro 2016 quarter-final against Belgium, so to pull on the same shirt will be amazing.”

A fantastic achievement for two of our Young Glovers, the call-up extends to their respective coaches.

Leah Poole (U12s) and Mark Challen (U13) have worked closely with both players and are delighted to see their efforts recognised.

With Jack ready to international action, Leah commented: “It’s so rewarding to see a player develop and reap the rewards. It’s brilliant to see players coming through into the first-team but also have our youth players recognised.

“It’s the reason we do our jobs,” she added. “It shows the programme is working and is good recognition of that.”

That notion was added to by Mark who said: “Ryan’s work rate and humility means he is always hungry to learn and improve and he’s been an excellent addition.

“We all are very excited about his potential moving forward and are proud of his recent achievements at International level."

All at Yeovil Town Football Club wish Jack and Ryan all the best during their time with Wales and look forward to seeing their continued development at Huish Park.
