Vanarama’s Fanarama! Yeovil’s season so far, the year that was and what 2020 has to offer!

Sponsors Vanarama look back on our strong start to the season

18 December 2019

Super supporter Sheridan Robins offers league sponsors Vanarama her take on 2019 and explains how she first fell in love with the club

So we’re at the half-way stage - sum up the season for us so far:

"It has been a really enjoyable season to be a fan so far. We have played some excellent passing football and scored a lot of goals.

"The feel-good factor at Huish Park has well and truly returned thanks to Darren Sarll and his recruitment.

"The atmosphere makes you want to attend every game and that is something which has been missing over the past few years. The fans are right behind the lads because the effort is there."

A battle for promotion wasn’t predicted by everyone, that’s fair to say. Can you stay up there?

"On paper, I think we have the strongest squad in the league. But there are strong teams up there at the top.

"One thing I will say, is we have the best striker in the league by far. Rhys Murphy could be the difference between getting promoted and not getting promoted. "

Darren Sarll has come in and re-connected the fans and the players. How much credit is he due?

"A huge amount. He came into a broken club with a broken fan base. He has instilled a passion and a winning mentality and has also made us enjoy Non-League.

"There has been no sulking about where we are, there has only been excitement about what we want to achieve. That has meant the fans have bought into it and are enjoying the National League."

What will 2020 bring for the club?

"Promotion, I hope. But, more than that I hope to see more exciting football matches and electric atmospheres.

"To return to the Football League at the first time of asking has always been the dream and I don't think any of us thought that would be the case with how far we had slipped in terms of our losing mentality."

Your player of the season so far?

"Myles Hippolyte.

"Murphy has been outstanding going forward but the creator of almost all of our good play is midfield maestro Myles.

"His movement and his pace is too much for National League defenders to handle and should Murphy miss out on the golden boot, I would expect him to get player of the season."

So what has been Yeovil’s high point?

"I think the best moment has been the victory away at Solihull. That match had everything. Luke Wilkinson scored the winner and ended heroically in goal.

"He made a match-winning save in the final minute and it is at that point, I realised just how good this team is and just how close they are!"

Everyone loves a good away day! What one sticks out as your favourite and why?

Bromley away was quite something. We did not play our best and Bromley are up there with us but somehow we managed to secure a point with a 97th minute equaliser. Hundreds of Yeovil fans were sent into euphoria and suddenly the abject performance was forgotten.

Why did you first start following the club and how did you first get involved?

"Yeovil Town is in the family. My great uncle Gerry Lock was chairman and my Great Nan's ashes have been scattered on the pitch.

"My Dad and Grandma took me to my first match when I was 15 and I haven't looked back since. We bleed green and white and Dad and I still have season tickets."

What makes Yeovil so unique and so special to you?

"It is a family club which puts the badge above anything else. It is a big part of all the fans' lives and I can't imagine not going to Huish Park every week."

Tough one to end with….what’s your favourite memory of Huish Park?

"It has to be the Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg against Sheffield United in 2013. 1-0 down from the first leg and scored goals after five minutes and 85 minutes.

"We played so well and thoroughly deserved our place at Wembley. The celebrations at full time were so special and I was right next to where the players were. What a season and what a team!!"
