REPORT | Under-18s return to winning ways

Young Glovers bounce back at Newport

29 September 2018

After no game for two weeks the Under-18s the Young Glovers returned to winning ways after suffering a first league defeat last time out.

Looking to bounce back from defeat at Forest Green Rovers a fortnight ago, strikes from Neville Nzembela and Archie Sturdy secured a comfortable 2-0 win.

After suffering something of an injury crisis prior to their break, Town were bolstered by the return to fitness of Tom Hayes and Tai Fleming.

Starting on the front foot from the first whistle, Yeovil took the game to Newport and looked to press high up the pitch to win the ball back and create scoring chances.

The Exiles were reduced to long ball tactics and nearly caught out the green and whites on a few occasions due to a lack of concentration at the back.

On a similar note, the Young Glovers had to deal with long throws into the box – something not faced before -  and although not always convincingly, the visitors dealt with the threat.

With 20 minutes on the clock and having defended well, Town broke the deadlock.

Good movement from Nzembela saw the striker receive the ball in the opposition area only to be brought down for a penalty, which he duly took and converted to open the scoring.

Despite their goal advantage, it was Newport who enjoyed the better of the play afterwards with Yeovil giving the ball away cheaply on numerous occasions up until the break.

The second half was similar to the first, with the visitors having to defend long balls and direct play from County, which caused a few nervy moments at the back.

Needing a second goal to steady the nerves, it came from the lively Sturdy.

Cutting in from the left, Sturdy unleashed an unstoppable right-footed shot into the far corner which killed off the game.

After conceding five at Forest Green last time out the clean sheet in South Wales was a welcome one and got Town’s season back on track after an impressive start.
