Manager Darren Way is throwing down the gauntlet for his players to cement their spot in the starting eleven, as Cambridge United visit on Saturday (3pm).

The Glovers brought in seven new faces during the January transfer window and saw four loanees head in the opposite direction, leaving Way with a squad of 25.

Boasting strength in depth across the pitch, the Town boss is enjoying the headache of only being able to select 11 for the starting lineup.

“I have to make sure the whole group remain focused,” he told iFollow Glovers. “One or two will have to deal with team selection, which is what I’ve tried to create and now I’ve got it.

“Jake Gray is a prime example,” he continued. “Coming from Luton where you can almost get away with having a poor game and someone else will take the responsibility, here you have to perform week in, week out when you’re in that eleven.

“He’s certainly the biggest increase in performance in a short space of time this year.”

Going into the weekend on the back of victory over Grimsby on Tuesday night, Town are targeting back-to-back league victories.

However, having lost the reverse fixture back in October, Way is wary of the threats posed by the U’s.

“It’s very tight whether you’re in the Premier League, Championship, top or bottom.

“Two or three wins can gain real momentum and see a real good surge, so with the squad we’ve got it gives us a very good chance.

“Having said that, they have good hold-up play, Uche (Ikpeazu) is strong and causes problems and brings others into play.

“In terms of resources, they had a real push at the start of the season to bring in successful players but knowing Shaun (Derry) the way I do he’ll want a little bit more.

“It’s very difficult whatever club you’re at and we all have our own problems to deal with but all I can say is that on Saturday, we have got to find a solution to win.”
