Five key points from Town’s 2017/18 fixture list

YTFC.net looks at the Glovers schedule in more detail.

21 June 2017

Excitement for the new campaign is building following the release of Town’s 2017/18 Sky Bet League Two fixture list.

YTFC.net picks out some of the key talking points from the schedule.

On the road to start and finish

For the first time since 2011/12, Town will begin and end the campaign away from home. That season the Glovers suffered defeats in both fixtures – hopefully not an omen! Darren Way takes his side to Luton Town for the third time in a year on the opening day of the season and concludes it with a trip to National League champions Lincoln City.

Two newcomers in August

It won’t take long for Town to meet one of the ‘newbies’ to Sky Bet League Two. A trip to Forest Green Rovers in the third week of August is scheduled, while the Green and Whites welcome relegated Coventry City to Huish Park a week later. The club’s last match against Forest Green came back in 2003, where a Kirk Jackson goal earned Yeovil three points. Coventry’s last visit to Somerset ended goalless.

Festive away days

Jingle bells, jingle all the way – oh what fun it is to see Yeovil win away! Town face back-to-back away matches over a busy Christmas period. On Boxing Day, the Glovers will make the short trip to Cheltenham Town before ending the calendar year with a 555-mile round jaunt to Morecambe. Don’t fret though, the New Year kicks off with two home games!

Similar midweek trips

Two of the Glovers’ Tuesday away matches are quite similar to last season. They will once again head to Cambridge United for a game under the lights at the Abbey Stadium (October 17th), while the other is in Derbyshire. Mansfield Town were midweek opponents last season; this time round it is Chesterfield (September 26th)- just 14 miles from Field MIll. Boxing Day (Cheltenham Town) also falls on a Tuesday.

Long and short of it

Carlisle United is Town’s longest trip by some distance. It’s a month earlier than last season’s fixture (November) so hopefully won’t be as cold for the Green and White Army! Exeter City remains the Glovers’ shortest journey after they suffered defeat in the play-off final last term. That game falls just after the New Year.
