PREVIEW: YEOVIL TOWN V YORK CITY

1 January 2016

Yeovil Town are back in SkyBet League Two action this coming Saturday when the Glovers host fellow strugglers York City.

The game pits the side in 24th vs the side in 22nd. Even at this stage in the season, throwing phrases around like “six pointer” and “must win” may not be exaggerating all that much.

It is Darren Way’s first match in permanent charge of Yeovil following his appointment of first team affairs on New Year’s Eve.

His first port of call will be to address the squad with this match taking place just inside the Januaray transfer window.

The contracts of Francois Zoko and Darren Ward – two key personnel in the upturn of performance – are described as being ‘short term’ and will need addressing after this fixture.

New additions could be on the way, too – but getting deals done within 24 hours of the window opening whilst trying to prepare for a match might be asking a bit much even for the hard working team of Way and Skiverton.

So, Yeovil will most likely go into the game with the same squad as the Oxford fixture.

During that game, Jakub Sokolik was forced off in the second half and so Alex Lacey may be required to step in once more.

Ryan Bird missed out on Monday too, he failed to recover from a dead leg sustained in the Boxing Day fixture vs Plymouth and he could be back into contention with a few extra days rest.

The news that excited Yeovil fans the most this week was the news that both Kevin Dawson and Simon Gillett took part in pre match warm ups on Monday morning ahead of the Oxford fixture before both returning to training with the rest of the squad.

The chance of either being included in the squad still remains slim, but it’s a big step closer to having two key players back for the run in.

York City travel to Somerset after a disruptive week in Yorkshire.

The flooding has given the club headaches over training facilities and so the Mintermen have travelled down early to use the Bristol City set up as a base.

York did manage to get one game in over the festive period, an away draw at Mansfield Town this past Monday.

Their game on Boxing Day vs Northampton fell to the weather but their win vs Morecambe a week prior got through unscathed.

The three points on offer this weekend will either see Yeovil overtake their opponents or will see York put a whopping five point gap between them and the drop zone.

A draw helps neither side in truth, with Hartlepool (21st) facing Newport (20th) and Dagenham (23rd) hoping to draw Exeter (16th) into a spot of bother.

This game is important for Yeovil, for Darren Way and for the Glovers fans, so don’t miss it.

Ticket details are below for those of you thinking of getting behind Way and the team.

Pre-match ticket prices are being held right up until kick off, so bring the friends and family to get right behind the side.

Last time we met

When the two sides met earlier this campaign, the midweek trip ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat for the Glovers.

The injury-ravaged side were on the wrong end of a single goal win – the only strike coming from former Yeovil man James Berrett.

Prior to this season, Yeovil and York have only met twice in competitive league action – during the 2003/04 season. Both the home and away fixtures ended in wins for the Glovers.

The home leg went first and saw Yeovil come through as 3-0 winners; Kirk Jackson, Colin Miles and Adam Stansfield all on the scoresheet in the emphatic win.

Back up in North Yorkshire as the season drew to a close, Yeovil were thankful to Paul Terry and Andy Lindegaard for a couple of second half goals to claim the double over the Minstermen.
