PREVIEW: BARNET V YEOVIL TOWN

29 April 2016

Yeovil Town are back in SkyBet League Two action this coming Saturday with a trip to Barnet.

The penultimate game of the season pits two sides playing for positions in midtable with both sides comfortably safe from the drop.

Barnet lie in 15th place while the Glovers have made themselves comfortable in 20th.

Five places separate the sides, but that gap is a full 14 points, too big to try and bridge before the season is over but there are other modes of motivating the squad.

Gaffer Darren Way is beginning to mould his ideas and squad for next season and has said he is judging everyone’s endeavour over the final games as to who may or may not get a contract.

Elsewhere, he could also make a couple of changes with Yeovil record breaker Ollie Bassett making the match day squad a couple of times recently.

We know that skipper Darren Ward and his central defensive partner Jakub Sokolik are both missing through injury with Alex Lacey and Nathan Smith getting plaudits from fans for their performances.

Eagle eyed fans who took the chance to look through the images of a recent training session on the various YTFC social network will have noticed Omar Sowunmi back in training.

The tall striker/central defender has returned from a long term injury and will be itching to make an impression on the side before the season comes to an end.

One note for Darren Way to consider is which of the six loanees misses out.

Harry Cornick got the goal against Northampton at the weekend, while Connor Roberts has been a virtual ever present at the back.

One of the others is likely to sit out with Brandon Goodship missing out last time.

The Glovers form is pretty good having held champions Northampton to a draw last week and having only lost to local rivals Bristol City and Exeter since the middle of March.

As for Barnet, they too drew 1-1 last Saturday.

The draw with Mansfield saw John Akinde open the scoring before seeing their league pegged back later on.

The Bees’ line up included former Glover Bondz N’Gala at the heart of defence and they too have been including a number of younger members of their squad on match days.

It’s the final away day of the season… it certainly hasn’t been boring for the Glovers’ travelling faithful, show your support one last time on the road this Saturday and make sure you get your tickets for the final home game next Saturday against Leyton Orient.

Last time we met

The two teams have already met twice this season, once in the League and once in the early rounds of the JPT.

In the cup, a second half own goal saw the Glovers progress, while in the league game it was a dramatic late comeback from the Green and Whites.

Aaron McClean had put the away side two goals to the good, but Francois Zoko netted twice in the last ten minutes to earn a point.

Prior to that, the two sides last crossed paths in competitive action during the FA Cup of 2003/04. Yeovil beat Barnet on their way to meeting Liverpool in the later rounds.

The game, at Huish Park, was played in front of nearly 6000 people and saw Yeovil thrash their opponents 5-1. Gavin Williams, Colin Miles, Jake Edwards and Nick Crittenden all taking their share of the goal scoring spoils.

The last league meeting came the season before with the results not quite going in Yeovil’s favour. A 0-0 draw at home and a 2-1 defeat down at what was then, Underhill.

That 0-0 draw is however, the only time the sides have played out a game with fewer than three goals in since the turn of the millennium. There’s another 2-1 Barnet win and a 3-2 home win from the campaign before… so on that form, we should expect goals galore on Saturday.

Tickets for the game are available from either the Huish Park ticket office or from the ground on the day.
