Yeovil’s winless run at home continued with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wycombe, leaving the Glovers still inside the relegation zone.

Luke O’Nien’s powerful shot from twenty yards twenty minutes from time was enough for the Chairboys to steal all three points from Huish Park, after Chris Weale had kept them at bay for most of the game.

Ryan Bird’s volley at Matt Ingram in the first half was the closest the Glovers came, and attention now turns to the away tie at Northampton this Saturday.

On a cold and windy night at Huish Park, it was the visitors who had the first real chance. A Wycombe cross was headed clear by Alex Lacey, only going as far as the edge of the box to Matt Bloomfield, whose shot flew high and wide into the home terrace.

But the Chairboys were much more threatening on 16 minutes. A long ball forward was sliced by Lacey and let Garry Thompson clean through on goal, but the striker’s sidefoot shot was saved well by Chris Weale.

The resulting corner into the Yeovil found the head of Thompson who had wriggled clear of his marker, but there on the post was Harry Cornick to clear it off the line and away to safety.

Wycombe thought they had won a penalty two minutes after. O’Nien weaved his way through the box and fell over as he tried to round Weale; Darren Deadman waved away the appeals, but booked Ben Tozer for his involvement in an off-the-ball disagreement in the moments after.

Yeovil had their first big chance ten minutes before half time. Francois Zoko raced down the right wing and whipped the ball towards Ryan Bird at the far post, but his volley was pushed away by Matt Ingram from point blank range.

But as half-time drew closer , it was Chris Weale who ensured both teams went in level. Patient play by the visitors worked Thompson into the box, but the Glovers keeper once again foiled the former Notts County man.

Yeovil made their attacking intent obvious from the start. Harry Cornick caught the Chairboy defence cold, cutting inside off the left wing at speed and hit a shot with real venom, only for Matt Ingram to catch comfortably.

The lively Francois Zoko then danced his way towards goal only for Aaron Pierre to stop the Ivorian advancing into the box, picking up a card for his troubles. Matty Dolan hit a powerful shot from the layoff, but Wycombe got bodies in the way and cleared to safety.

But Wycombe would break down the deadlock with twenty minutes left. An attack on the left wing by substitute Aaron Amadi-Holloway was laid off to  O’Nien twenty yards out. The midfielder curled into the top corner past the diving Weale, to score the first Chairboys goal at Huish Park since 2005.

With time running out, Yeovil had to attack. A run by George Thomas towards goal cause the Wycombe to backtrack but his pass found substitute Ryan Dickson in space, only for Ingram to get down to the wingers low drive.

It was desperation stuff into five minutes of injury time, and a freekick high into the Wycombe box fell to George Thomas who turned and shot, only for the Chairboys defence to survive and consign Yeovil to another disappointing result in front of the home faithful.
