A double from Paddy Madden and a third from James Hayter saw Yeovil Town take all three points with a 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow tonight.

Madden, on fire in his loan spell from Carlisle United, made it five in four since his arrival from Brunton Park; his goals either side of Hayter’s close range finish.

Matt Richards pulled a goal back with a disputed penalty with ten minutes left but it proved a mere consolation as Gary Johnson’s side moved serenely up to eleventh place, five points off the playoffs.

The Yeovil boss had received a huge boost before the game when all five players who took fitness tests passed with flying colours. In addition Daniel Johnson, the new loan signing from Aston Villa took his place alongside Luke Ayling, absent from the squad for the last three games.

After Byron Webster had gone close with a thumping shot on six minutes, it took just two more minutes for Yeovil to open the scoring. Joe Edwards was crudely fouled by Shrews skipper Matt Richards out wide and when Jamie McAllister swung the set piece in, Paddy Madden got in ahead of his marker to head home his fourth goal of the season.

Asa Hall headed a Paul Parry cross over the crossbar on seventeen minutes and Sam Foley could consider himself unlucky when his cross shot was headed from under his own bar by ex-Bristol Rovers defender Joe Jacobson; the full back coming to the aid of former Glovers keeper Chris Weale.

The visitors continued to build steadily from the back and take their time to create attacks patiently with Korey Smith and Ed Upson the architects in midfield and Keanu Marsh-Brown with Foley attacking down the flanks, looking threatening every time they pressed forward.

Marsh-Brown forced a great save from Weale on 35 minutes and Foley fired over the crossbar but the Shrews came into the game more as the half ended and Marek Stech easily saved headers from Lee Collins and Jacobson.

Smith was then crocked in an early second half challenge and James Hayter also needed treatment when he was clattered by Collins as Shrewsbury’s approach turned physical.

McAllister had tweaked his ankle in the first half during a clearance so went off to be replaced by Dominic Blizzard who slipped into the role he took in Saturday’s win over Bury.

No more than a minute more had elapsed when the Glovers doubled their advantage through Hayter. Marsh-Brown crossed the ball in from the flank and the striker netted his seventh goal of the season.

The goal ensured that the former AFC Bournemouth forward has now netted against twenty out of twenty four League One clubs during his prolific career; new signing Daniel Johnson coming on for the hobbling Smith straight afterwards.

Someone who has suddenly found his scoring boots has been Madden and on seventy minutes, he scored his fifth goal in four games when Upson found him with a fantastic ball to the far post.

The goal made it three nil to Yeovil but that advantage lasted just ten minutes as Johnson was harshly penalised for a push on Shrews sub Tom Bradshaw. Referee David Coote, efficient all night, awarded the spot kick and Matt Richards sent penalty expert Stech the wrong way.

The final ten minutes saw home manager Graham Turner throw Jermaine Grandison up front as an aerial presence  but aside from Gavin Williams coming on for the tiring Hayter, there was no further action and the 125 travelling Glovers fans celebrated a great three points at their first visit to the Greenhous Meadow.
