Yeovil Town made the trip along the M5 to Walsall and returned to Somerset with three points after a 2-1 victory.

Second half goals from James Hayter and Kevin Dawson were enough to secure Town’s first win of the season.

Despite starting the game brightly Town were lucky not to go behind after just six minutes.

Walsall defender Paul Downing found himself free at the back post, but he tamely headed wide. The tall defender was left disappointed when he really should have done better and at least troubled Weale in the Yeovil goal.

On ten minutes Town’s first chance fell the Hayter when he got behind the Walsall defence only to his powerful effort got narrowly wide of the target.

Just after the half hour mark Ashley Grimes thought he had opened the scoring for the home side. He turned well on the penalty spot to unleash a volley that stung the palms of Weale.

With one minute signaled to be added on at the end of the first half Town had another lucky escape. Walsall’s Romaine Sawyers beat the offside trap, but with only Weale to beat he fluffed his shot and it went harmlessly wide of the target.

Ten minutes into the second half Town took a deserved lead. Neat build up saw Kevin Dawson create room and beat his marker on the right. The Irishman’s superb dink cross was on the head of Hayter who powerfully headed home into the far corner past O’Donnell.

On 71 minutes the home side drew level. With Town’s attack breaking down the Saddlers broke away and forced two corner in quick succession. From the second corner former Yeovil loanee Billy Clifford swung in the set piece. Town half cleared but Bradshaw was on hand for the home side to bundle the ball over the line.

Within two minutes the Glovers restored their lead thanks to Dawson. The winger picked the ball up just inside the area and hit a low shot across O’Donnell and through a crowd of players, much to the delight of the 186 travelling fans.

With the Glovers now off the mark, they look forward to the visit of Scunthorpe United to Huish Park on Saturday.
