Yeovil Town made it an incredible eight successive League One wins with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at Huish Park this afternoon.

Goals from Byron Webster, a James Hayter penalty and Paddy Madden, his tenth in seven games, saw the Glovers rise to third in the League One table after an impressive attacking display that saw Gary Johnson’s side have twenty attempts on goal during the game.

The manager unsurprisingly named an unchanged side as he searched for that eighth consecutive win following Tuesday’s win over Preston North End. And in an enthralling first half, the Glovers’ attacking intent was clear to see as they drove forward at every opportunity at the Scunthorpe backline.

In a bright start to the game, the Iron had the first chance on nine minutes when Callum Kennedy sent a shot fizzing past Marek Stech’s left hand post. But from then on, it was all Yeovil and Sam Foley in  particular who could have had a first half hat trick were it not for Sam Slocombe in the visiting goal.

Foley went close straight after the Kennedy chance then Joe Edwards volleyed at Slocombe, Paddy Madden shot wide twice, Foley fired over from Ed Upson’s corner and both Madden and Webster had shots blocked as the chance tally piled up.

The first goal came on 26 minutes with Town’s tenth attempt of the game. Edwards controlled the ball brilliantly in midfield before squaring to Foley who was once again denied by a fine tip-over from Slocombe in goal. From the Upson corner, Byron Webster headed home his fourth goal of the season with a stooping effort.

James Hayter had his first real sight of goal soon afterwards but Slocombe pushed his  effort went well wide and the striker then tried an audacious shot from fully forty yards after the keeper had miscued his clearance but the shot sailed wide of the mark.

Right on half time, came the controversial point of the match. Akpo Sodje seemed to be winning a foot race with Webster to the ball and as the Yeovil centre half challenged the forward, he fell to the floor. Referee Dean Whitestone looked over to his assistant referee who said “no foul” and despite loud protests from the Scunthorpe players, there was no free kick awarded and no red card issued either as the “last man”.

The first ten minutes of the second period saw Iron manager Brian Laws make two quick changes with Sodje being replaced by ex-Leeds striker Mike Grella and Andy Barcham coming on for Mark Duffy. The moves worked and the visitors looked more potent going forward with Jimmy Ryan volleying wide and Niall Canavan shooting at Stech.

At the other end, the chances were piling up for Town as they did everything but score. Upson lashed over, Hayter sidefooted at Slocombe, Madden’s acrobatic volley from an Upson corner whistled past the post and Madden then saw another effort saved.

On 67 minutes, Luke Ayling was booked for bringing down Barcham on the edge of the box and Josh Walker curled the free kick just wide but the second goal was soon to arrive. Sam Foley broke down the left channel and after shrugging off one attempt to bring him down, was then felled by a second challenge. Ref Whitestone pointed to the spot and James Hayter coolly slotted home his twelfth goal of the campaign.

Four minutes later it was game, set and match as Joe Edwards crossed unselfishly and Paddy Madden tapped home for his tenth in seven games, his 17th of the season and the seventh successive match he has scored in.

Johnson then had the luxury of bringing on the cavalry as he calls them; the triple pace threat of Nathan Ralph, Lewis Young and Kwesi Appiah came on for Foley, Hayter and Jamie McAllister. The fourth goal was close but never arrived with Upson, Madden and Hayter all going close late on.
