A superb second half showing from Bristol City saw them run out comfortable 3-0 winners against Yeovil Town at Huish Park tonight.

After an even first half, the table topping City side moved through the gears in the second half. Former Glovers stars Kieran Agard and Luke Freeman scored straight after the break and sub George Saville added a late third to see the Robins go thirteen points clear at the top.

The defeat, combined with Coventrys draw against Bradford means that the gap between Yeovil and the safety of 20th spot has grown to four points with two games in succession against sides in the drop zone with Yeovil.

Unsurprisingly manager Terry Skiverton went with an unchanged side after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Oldham. Lining up against the Glovers were four players with history at the club in Luke Freeman, Luke Ayling, Korey Smith and Kieran Agard. And it was Ayling who had the games first chance when he poked wide from just inside the box as early as the second minute.

There weren’t many chances in the first twenty minutes though City had the bulk of the possession and a couple of corners. Sam Foley tested City keeper Frank Fielding with a right footed effort and a later effort in the first half from Joel Grant was off target. Agard turned and fired wide while top scorer Aaron Wilbraham couldn’t get direction on a header as the half closed.

It seemed like City had a half time roasting with their cuppa as they came out ready, willing and able to take Yeovil apart. And just four minutes in, the Robins found themselves two goals up, both from ex Yeovil players. The first came ninety seconds in when Joe Bryan’s ball across the box was finished at the far post by Kieran Agard. Then before Yeovil had caught their breath, it was 2-0 when Mark Little fed Luke Freeman and he curled a beauty into the far corner of the net.

James Hayter came on for Kieffer Moore straight after and the striker had a chance almost immediately but flicked his header wide from Grants cross. Foley shot way over from long range and Hayter then headed over from Gozie Ugwu’s ball in to the middle.

Agard had two further chances to grab himself a second goal but he flicked wide then, after getting the better of Byron Webster, he sent his shot well wide of the near post. The chances weren’t all one way though and Adam Morgan’s long range effort, similar to the one that hit the post against Oldham three days ago, almost went in but took a vital deflection and out for a corner.

Hayter was Yeovil’s best hope for a goal and Grant set him up with another opportunity but he curled his shot over the angle of post and crossbar. Yeovil keeper Scott Loach then saved from Agard but was helpless on 85 minutes as the killer third went in. City sub George Savile hit a shot from outside the box that was only returned straight to him by a Yeovil clearance. He then hit a sweet left foot drive into the corner for his first goal since arriving on loan from Wolves.

Fielding was alert when Grant hit a low drive at him late on but in truth, Yeovil were simply beaten by a side that won’t be playing League One football next season, having won their fifth successive game and going thirteen points clear at the top of the table.
