Yeovil Town will look for a third win on the spin on Saturday afternoon (3pm) as Southend United visit Huish Park.

The two sides are separated by just two points in 13th & 12th place respectively, and Town can leapfrog the Shrimpers with a victory.

For the visitors, after a positive start to the year, Kevin Maher’s side have suffered two defeats in their last three games, and will be looking to bounce back and reinvigorate their final stretch of the season.

Darren Sarll’s thoughts

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Sarll said; “I think Kevin’s (Maher) has been brilliant. We know each other very well, he’s a terrific competitive guy.

“He was a very good player, tough as anything. You’re determined by you’re recruitment, and what he’s done well with is the second batch of recruitment.

“The team Southend are playing now is nothing like the team that started the season.”

Team news

Max Hunt remains on-target for a mid-April return after his training injury earlier this year. That means Ben Barclay’s loan is to be extended, with Sarll confirming it should be completed on Friday.

Glovers no.1 Grant Smith is also unavailable due to his groin injury, whilst Adi Yussuf remains on international duty with Tanzania.

Toby Stephens’ loan deal with Barnstaple Town was extended until the end of the season so he’ll line-up for the Devon outfit on Saturday afternoon.

Middlesbrough loanee Jack Robinson is also unavailable due to an injury reoccurrence.

Have we met before?

The two sides met in National League action in January, a matter of days after the Glovers’ FA Cup clash with AFC Bournemouth. Southend were the 2-1 victors that evening, with Reuben Reid grabbing Town’s goal.

Prior to the earlier encounter, the two sides had not met since 2017 in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Southend, who were a League One club at the time were knocked out by League Two Yeovil through an Otis Khan penalty. This was the last meeting between the two sides at Huish Park with Matt Worthington the only current member of the squad involved that day.

A foot in the opposition camp

Many Yeovil Town supporters would’ve been keeping an eye on Southend United after they signed former Glovers forward Rhys Murphy in the Summer. However, he is unlikely to line-up at Huish Park after an injury he sustained in the reverse fixture in January.

After a superb run at the start of the year, Southend have suffered two defeats in their last three games, most recently at the hands of Maidenhead United.
