Yeovil Town defender Luke Ayling has been selected for the Football League team of the week.
Each week the Official Football League website will bring you the Team of the Week. Produced by the Press Association, the Teams of the Week features the eleven top performing players from each division from this weekend’s matches.
Shaun Williams scored a last-gasp penalty for Milton Keynes Dons as they ended Sheffield United’s unbeaten record in npower League 1.
The central defender was solid throughout the 90 minutes at the heart of the Dons defence, keeping the Blades at bay, and then stepped up to score the winner from the spot in the dying seconds to make the npower League 1 Team of the Week.
That win for Karl Robinson’s men moved them within touching distance of the Play-Offs and Preston North End are another side chasing the top six who won at the weekend.
The Lillywhites travelled to Stevenage and returned from the Lamex Stadium with all three points courtesy of a 4-1 win.
Midfield duo Nicky Wroe and Jeffrey Monakana both found the net in the win and they are the North End representatives in the Team of the Week.
Bournemouth and Swindon Town both recorded away victories at the weekend and have two players each included.
Harry Arter scored the only goal of the game as the Cherries beat Doncaster Rovers to keep up their good form under the stewardship of Eddie Howe – that was their fifth victory since his return six games ago. Defender Charlie Daniels is also in the squad for his performance at left-back in the slender away win.
Matt Ritchie and Wes Foderingham are the Swindon players to be included. Ritchie hit a second-half piledriver as Paolo Di Canio’s Robins moved into the League 1 Play-Off places with a 2-0 win away at Walsall. Wes Foderingham, meanwhile, took the plaudits for keeping a clean sheet in the game against the Saddlers and, therefore, takes the place between the sticks.
Scunthorpe United may be languishing near the foot of the npower League 1 table but the form of striker Leon Clarke, who is on loan from Charlton Athletic, has been the highlight of this season so far.
The 27-year-old hit another two goals at the weekend, taking his tally to 10 in 12 matches, which guided the Iron to a 2-1 victory at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry City.
Partnering Clarke up front in the team is the evergreen Kevin Lisbie, who also scored twice, as Leyton Orient overcame Shrewsbury Town 2-1.
Yeovil Town’s Luke Ayling and Tranmere Rovers’ Ben Gibson complete the defence, and the XI.
Ayling was on form for the Glovers as they overcame Hartlepool United 1-0, while Gibson stood out for Ronnie Moore’s Rovers as they came away from Boundary Park with three points thanks also to a 1-0 win over Oldham Athletic.
