2003/04

When Yeovil joined the football league back in 2003, the one thing supporters were looking forward to was not qualifying for the cup competition and going straight into the first round proper.

Of course, that season was remembered for the Liverpool game in January 2004 but getting to the third round meant negotiating two other rounds during November of 2003.

The balls were kind to Yeovil and drew them at home to Wrexham in the first round – a game that saw the TV cameras come to Somerset to witness history as one of the FA Cup’s greatest giant killers were now in the big time and out to make a name for themselves as a Football League side. It led to a convincing 4-1 win at Huish Park.

Some iconic names were on the score sheet that day; Kevin Gall got the ball rolling before ‘Super’ Gavin Williams, Colin Miles and finally Jake Edwards capped off a fine performance.

Yeovil would go on to put five past Barnet in the second round before the mighty Liverpool made the journey down to Huish Park.

2004/05

The season after, the first round draw was slightly less kind not just drawing Yeovil away but drawing them away at just about the most northern opposition possible.

Darlington is over 300 miles away, more than a 11 hour round trip for most of the travelling Glovers fans.

The first clash was an enthralling 3-3 draw which twisted and turned as a brace from Alun Armstrong was wiped out by Bartoscz Tarachulski’s double with the third goal coming from that man Colin Miles once more.

If the journey was harsh on Yeovil fans, the replay would have been even more testing for the Darlo fans who came down on a Tuesday night for the replay.

The game back at Huish Park was settled just before the hour when Darren Way, on his 200th Yeovil Town appearance scored the only goal.

Yeovil went on to beat Histon in Round Two before going one better than the year before and progressing through Round Three with a 3-0 win over Rotherham.

The season’s cup exploits were over in Round Four when Charlton proved just too good despite goals from Paul Terry and Arron Davies, the Addicks winning 3-2.

Tomorrow, YTFC.net will relive the last three Glovers wins in the first round of the FA Cup, there’s a Phil Jevons equaliser, controversy at Rushden and three thunderbolts against an old foe.
