Max Hunt has said his hard work on the training pitch is now coming to fruition on match days after a positive start to the 2021/22 season.

Despite a frustrating defeat on the opening day, Yeovil Town have bounced back with two wins on the spin against Hunt’s former side Aldershot Town and FC Halifax Town.

Most recently, Hunt and his teammates put together a resolute defensive display against Halifax, keeping a clean sheet and ending the Glovers’ BT Sport hoodoo with Joe Quigley’s first half penalty the difference.

Hunt himself has worked hard on his game since signing in Somerset in January 2021, he reflected on the work he’s put in so far ahead of Yeovil Town’s trip to Stockport.

“I’m very pleased, I’ve had to do some hard work, last season included,” said the 6-foot-6 defender.

“I think how hard we as a group have worked and what Darren and Terry have done that is a testament to how we’ve started. 

“For bigger players like myself and defenders especially, footwork is especially important. Spending time on that, alongside positional work is key.”

Last season, Town struggled for consistency in the back line, due to suspension and injury, Hunt himself suffered a fractured cheekbone against Wrexham. However, this season has seen a more consistent defence, with the 22-year-old potentially in line to partner Luke Wilkinson in a back four for the third successive game on Saturday. 

“Last season there were a lot of different parters playing in the back four for a lot of different reasons. 

“Whenever I’ve played with Wilko (Luke Wilkinson), we have a good relationship. On the pitch it’s meant we’ve got good results so long may it continue.

“We’re confident in ourselves, and we get that from what we see in training everyday.

“We’ve got Quigley up top who is scoring goals at the minute and we’re keeping them out as a team. I think everything is starting to click and hopefully we can go there Saturday and get a positive result.”

The towering defender has had to wait for the opportunity to show the Glovers faithful what he could do in person due to fixtures being played behind closed doors. Now with fans back in the ground, Hunt is relishing the opportunity to prove his worth.

“It’s been brilliant, when fans were back towards the end of last season I was injured, so I didn’t get a chance to play in front of them.

“This season has been my first opportunity to play in front of them. It’s games like last Saturday (against Halifax) where we’re digging in and holding on. 

“When we get the result and we can celebrate with the home end, they’re the moments that we work hard for.”
