The 22-year-old has cemented his spot in the centre of Town’s defence and captained the Glovers from the start for the first time in the 1-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Making 42 appearances so far this season, the former Ipswich defender reflected on a proud day despite the result when speaking to iFollow Glovers

“The result was very disappointing, but we have to give credit to them for the way they defended the whole game.

“It was a good moment for me, a proud moment for me and I’m sure for my family back home. A lot of the boys are my friends so it was a pleasure to lead them out onto the pitch.

“I felt honoured when he (the manager) told me (I was going to be captain), I did everything I could to live up to it.”

Now in his third season as a Glover, Sowunmi has spent time in both defence and attack for the Somerset outfit.

Now back in the heart of defence, Sowunmi is pleased with his development in recent times.

“I’ve worked hard to get where I am now and I’m very, very happy.

“We had a couple of talks a few years ago and last year and defence is where I want to be and I’m happy to be here now and to keep that spot.”
