Glovers’ supporter Sharon Edwards won the opportunity to present the defender with his well-deserved award.

On just his second start for the club, the 20-year-old Irish right-back gave an accomplished performance in defence whilst also netting an eye-catching strike in the dramatic 3-2 win over the Cod Army.

Corey Whelan, Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round commented: “Obviously I’m really pleased to pick up this award and now the most important thing is making the final at Wembley.

“We’ve faced some really tough teams in the competition so far and personally, for me to play in it twice and score my first goal was really nice. You might only get one chance to play at Wembley in your career so that’s a real incentive to get through to the final.”

Sharon Edwards, the winning fan, said: “It is such an honour being able to present the award to a worthy winner; Corey’s performance stole the show against Fleetwood with his fantastic first goal for the club! Hopefully he and the rest of the team can continue to perform as we get towards the business end of the season!”

Corey Whelan was joined on the shortlist by other standout performers from the Quarter-Final ties in the Checkatrade Trophy:

  • Corey Whelan (Yeovil Town)
  • JonNolan (Shrewsbury Town)
  • Harry Anderson (Lincoln City)
  • Danny Rowe (Lincoln City)
  • Harvey St Clair (Chelsea)
