After making 46 appearances last season, the 22-year-old was out of contract this summer but has put pen to paper on a new contract to remain in Green & White.

Having spent the last three seasons in Somerset, Sowunmi has morphed into a key figure since becoming an ever-present at the back for the Glovers during Darren Way’s tenure.

Scooping two end of season awards and claiming the Glovers’ Goal of the Season for his strike at Cheltenham on Boxing Day, the 22-year-old is now contracted in Somerset until 2020.

With 68 appearances to his name and a stint as captain towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign under his belt, Yeovil fans can look forward to Sowunmi adding to his appearance tally next season.

Commenting on the defender’s new deal, Town’s boss said: “Omar is a big signing for the future of this football club and we’ve put in a lot of effort to get this deal over the line.

“It’s a big statement of intent from the owner and the chairman and allows us to keep the core of the squad from last season.

“He’s developed at a very fast rate – which shows some of the others what can happen – and I’m excited that he’s decided to pledge his future to Yeovil Town Football Club.”
