Ahead of this weekend’s match between Yeovil Town and Dagenham and Redbridge we take a look at a striker who has played for both clubs.

Originally on the books of Aston Villa, Sam Williams would spend a few seasons at both Huish Park and Victoria Park at the back end of his career and made an impact at both.

The London born front man was originally on the books of Charlton as a youth, before developing further in the Aston Villa system.

Initially he had been deployed as a defender and holding midfielder but due to injuries in the Villa reserves found himself getting pushed further and further up field.

He never made a first team appearance for the Villains, but embarked on a number of loan deals across his spell in the Midlands.

Firstly, a spell at Wrexham, wielded his first goals, before Brighton and Hove Albion came calling in 2006.

As each loan deal came to an end he returned to Villa Park hoping to make his first team debut, but a life in the reserves was as good as it was ever going to get.

More loan deals in 2008 followed, he spent time at Colchester, Walsall and Brentford before being let go from Villa in the summer of 2009 and found himself on trial at Huish Park that summer.

He joined on a two year deal and would go onto play 70 times in the league, 51 from the start.

However, his style of play found himself used as more of a battering ram than potent goal scorer.

In total, he would only score 6 goals in the green and white of Yeovil Town, the number of yellow cards he accumulated was actually higher – 11.

When his contract ended in the summer of 2011, he would head to this Saturday’s opponents, Dagenham.

His new club wasn’t quite confirmed straight away – he returned to his very first club Charlton on trial but he returned to Victoria Park to sign a contract in August.

He played another 45 times across two seasons, ironically, his most prolific season in front of goal was actually his last.

He scored eight times during the 2012/13 season before budgetary restraints forced the Daggers hand into releasing him.

During the research for this article, it’s hard to find out what happened to him after being released, a couple of trials came and went at league clubs but he has not signed for anyone in the football pyramid – not that I can find anyway.

His finest day in a Glovers shirt may well have been, ironically, in defence.

He came on during the Glovers heroic 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday that saw both Adam Virgo and Luke Ayling sent off by Trevor Kettle.

Williams came on to replace Oli Johnson into the second half, but instead of slotting in up front, joined a makeshift defence that included Andy Williams and Paul Wotton.

His last two clubs meet this coming Saturday at Huish Park and you can be there to support the team.
