SIGNING | Malachi Linton boosts Glovers’ strike force

Yeovil Town are delighted to announce the signing of Malachi Linton on a two-year-deal following his departure from Wycombe Wanderers.

The 21-year-old joins off the back of a successful loan spell with King’s Lynn Town, where he struck eight goals in 20 National League starts.

Originally hailing from Ipswich, the forward began his career in the Tractor Boys’ academy, before departing for Crewe Alexandra to play for their U18’s side.

He then spent time with Lowestoft Town, scoring 13 goals in a short spell which caught the eye of Wycombe Wanderers.

A short loan spell with fellow Berkshire side Slough Town followed in the 2020/21 season before venturing to the Linnets for his successful temporary spell in the National League.

Commenting after signing his contract, Malachi said; “I’m excited. Yeovil is a big club with a good core of players and staff. I’m looking forward to coming in and adding to that.

“The manager has been a big pulling factor. We’ve had some good conversations. We share similar traits, but the main one being ambition. I’ve played here before, I’ve seen what it’s like, I simply couldn’t refuse.

“I can’t wait to meet up with the boys and get on the pitch.”

Manager Chris Hargreaves added; “Malachi is a player all of the coaching staff have seen. His goal record for games played at his age in this league is very good.

He’s a player with an excellent attitude and is someone who is hungry to succeed. He arrives with a strong recommendation from Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth. I think he will be an excellent addition to the squad, and I look forward to working with him.”

Don’t miss a minute of Malachi’s debut season at Huish Park, with season tickets now available – click HERE for more information.

TRANSFER | Ollie Hulbert begins Chris Hargreaves’ transfer business

Yeovil Town are delighted to announce the signing of Ollie Hulbert on a free transfer.

After departing Bristol Rovers at the end of last season, Hulbert signs a one-year deal with an option of an extra year and will work with his former Rovers coach, Chris Hargreaves at Yeovil Town.

A versatile forward, the 19-year-old played up front and on the wing last season, during his loan spells at Gloucester City and Hereford. Throughout his time in the National League North, Hulbert struck nine goals in 32 games.

The season prior, Hulbert enjoyed a loan spell in the Cymru Premier with Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he scored 14 goals in 23 games.

Commenting after his arrival was confirmed, Hulbert said; “I’m absolutely buzzing. It’s a move that’s been in the works for a little while, now that it’s all signed, I just can’t wait to start!”

Manager Hargreaves added; “Ollie is a young player with potential who is now ready to kick on. He will be a welcome addition to our squad.

“I know him well from our time at Rovers and look forward to working with him again.”

Welcome to Somerset, Ollie.

He became accustomed to scoring important goals for the Glovers, including openers against Stockport County & Weymouth, alongside the only goal of the game in our FA Cup Second Round clash against Stevenage.

CLUB NEWS | 2021/22 EPDP round-up

As the season has come to a close, it offers time to reflect on the many successes the club has enjoyed over the last twelve months.

This season has been the first that our Elite Player Development Programme, in partnership with Yeovil College, has consisted as the club’s sole youth system. With the final academy scholars departing 12 months ago, the system has been the sole focus, and has thrived in the spotlight, and numbers are only expected to grow over the next year.

The most high-profile success of the programme has been Ollie Haste signing his first professional deal with the Club. Haste, who captained the U18’s side, made his first starts in the Somerset Premier Cup and made a real impression, being named in the match day squad on a number of occasions. Haste’s strong form also earned him a call-up to the England College’s side, coached by our new assistant manager Chris Todd.

Late in the season saw Haste given his opportunity to impress in the National League, coming on as a substitute in our final day win against Altrincham.

However on a team-wide perspective, the performances as a whole have been excellent. Earlier this year, the U18’s travelled to Nottingham to compete in the AOC National 7-a-side football tournament, representing the South West, where they came home as Champions!

The positives don’t stop there, in our first season in the competition, our youngsters won the College League (ECFA), and secured promotion.

In our Saturday league (South West Counties League), the U18’s finished in mid table, but with it being the side’s first season in the competition, will be more determined than ever to climb the table next season.

In cup action, the U18’s reached the quarter finals of the College knockout cup, a national competition, where they were narrowly knocked out on in a penalty shootout. Whilst also reaching the semi final of the Gary Else Cup, (the South West Counties League Cup).

Benjani Jr warms up during SPC game against Cheddar

The Somerset Premier Cup saw many of the youngsters make themselves known to Glovers supporters, with involvements for Haste, Korey Andrews, Fin Ridout, Jake Graziano, Benjani Jr, Mason Hunter, Sam Hodges, Callum Deemer with a number more in the match day squad, warming up with the first team squad. Andrews even found the net, scoring against Odd Down in the semi-final.

Academically, the programme saw many students hit a Distinction* grade (equivalent to an A*), with some securing offers from universities such as Liverpool John Moors & Exeter College following their departure from the programme.

Reflecting on the season, Lead EPDP coach and U18’s manager Matt Percival said;

“With this being the first year that the programme was operating as our sole youth system, on the whole, it was successful, both with team and individual successes.

“Next year we’ll be playing in a higher college league and having played our first full season in the South West Counties League, we’ll be better equipped going forward in those fixtures.

“I feel the programme is going from strength to strength, after a record intake last year, we’re projected to break that record once again. It’s not too late to apply either, head to the college website for more information.

“We’ll be back for pre-season in August, with some friendlies to be announced soon. It would be great to see some fans there!”

CLUB NEWS | Marcus Stewart joins as head of player development

Yeovil Town are delighted to announce that Marcus Stewart has joined our coaching staff as head of player development for the 2022/23 season.

The former forward, who needs no introduction to Glovers fans, becomes the second appointment to Chris Hargreaves’ backroom staff.

Stewart is fondly remembered for his goal scoring exploits in a green & white shirt, most notably scoring against Nottingham Forest in the League One play-offs as Town secured passage to Wembley.

Stewart in his playing days for the Glovers

During the later years of his playing career, Stewart held first team coaching roles at Exeter City, eventually working as a full-time coach following his retirement in 2011.

One year later, he joined hometown club Bristol Rovers as a development coach, but quickly became assistant manager within a year of his arrival.

He held the role as assistant when the Gas were promoted from the National League in the 14/15 season, followed by a second successive promotion into League One the next season. Departing in 2018, Stewart joined Walsall as assistant alongside former Rovers manager Darrell Clarke.

Commenting after his arrival was confirmed, Stewart said; “When Chris called me, this just felt like the right thing to do, I’ve been here before and I feel like I can help him.

“I’m here to do my best, like I did before. This is a club I’m fond of, it’s a club that’s local to me and where I have had a good relationship with the fans.”

Welcome back, Marcus.

CLUB NEWS | Chris Todd appointed assistant manager

Yeovil Town are delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Todd as assistant manager.

Todd, who was a former teammate of Chris Hargreaves at Torquay United, joins having managed the Gulls’ U18’s side since 2019, whilst also working within the first team set up. Last season, his U18’s side won the South West Counties Youth League & the Gary Else Cup.

The 40-year-old Welshman also possesses management experience within the National League, leading Eastleigh to a seventh-place finish in the 2015/16 season. His most recent role in first team management was at Gloucester City during the 2018/19 season.

As a player, Todd began his career with hometown club Swansea City and played 43 times for them, a move into the West Country then followed, to play for Exeter City, where he made 154 league apps.

He then moved across Devon to line-up for Torquay United, where he tasted promotion to the Football League in 2008/09. A number of loan spells followed within the National League, playing for the likes of Forest Green Rovers, Newport County, Hereford & Salisbury.

Eventually, Eastleigh became his permanent home in 2012, becoming their player manager just three years later.

Commenting after his arrival was confirmed; “I’m very excited. It’s a new challenge and when I spoke to Chris, we had a good conversation. We discussed the future of the football club and I wanted to be a part of that.

“I hope the fans are excited about the new journey that we’re on together. I will give 110% daily, as I know Chris will and the rest of the background staff.

“This is a good group and we’re trying to make them successful, if they’re successful the Club is successful and it’s a good moment for everyone.”

Welcome to Somerset, Chris.

CLUB NEWS | Rest in peace, Patrick Billett

Yeovil Town are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of supporter Patrick Billett.

Patrick, who was fondly nicknamed, “the mad bell-ringer,” became well known for ringing his bell every time Yeovil found the back of the net. Each season Patrick bought a Yeovil Town shirt and had “PAT THE MAD BELL-RINGER” emblazoned across the back of it.

We would like to extend our condolences to Patrick’s family and friends at this difficult time.

CONTRACT | Matt Worthington extends his stay

Yeovil Town are delighted to announce that Matthew Worthington has extended his Yeovil Town contract for the 2022/23 season.

Worthington’s new contract furthers his time as the club’s longest serving player, having signed for the Glovers in January 2019.

Last season, he became the latest player to make 100 appearances for Yeovil Town, with his total figure now standing at 139. The 24-year-old established himself as a regular fixture in the Glovers’ starting 11 during the last campaign, making 41 appearances in all competitions, the most he has made in a single season.

He did no harm to his reputation scoring the opener against Weymouth in an FA Cup replay at the Bob Lucas Stadium in October.

Commenting after his stay was confirmed, the midfielder said; “I’m delighted to sign a new deal to stay at this club once again.

“We’ve got a few weeks to go, but I’m already looking forward to getting back out there with the lads and doing all we can for the fans.”
