A goal just after the hour mark from substitute Mitch Conning gave Yeovil Town's under-18 team a 1-0 win over a West Bromwich Albion youth side earlier today.
Conning had been played through by a quick free kick from Rob Clowes and saw his first shot saved by the keeper but was smart enough to finish at the second attempt.
It was the second victory in four days for the young Glovers who had seen off Torquay United in their first Football League Youth Alliance match on Saturday.
Whereas Saturday had seen a more physical threat from the opponents, today provided an opportunity to match up against a very technical Baggies side containing four second year and six first year scholars including England internationals such asAdil Nabi.
The first half saw the game lack goals but certainly not chances with the Glovers providing the more potent attacks and the hosts restricted to mainly long range efforts.
The goal was created following smart thinking from Clowes who picked out Conning with a quick set piece and the youngster, running from deep, finished off the rebound after the keeper saved his initial attempt.
The Glovers were good value for their win and could have added more finding themselves one-on-one with the keeper on three other occasions while the Baggies, though creating a couple of decent chances, were forced to shoot from outside the box.
Acting Head of Youth Scott Green declared himself "very pleased" with the performance adding "I think we deserved the victory on chances created. Today was a new challenge for the boys and they performed well, playing some fantastic football at times."
He continued "I'm just as pleased with the fact that we have now kept two clean sheets; this is helping the team's confidence build up."
