YOUTHS GO DOWN TO OXFORD...

Posted on: Sun 21 Feb 2010
Yeovil Town suffered a heavy defeat as they went down by seven goals to three against Oxford United at Sherborne.

The game got off to the worst possible start for the Glovers as Tom Hopkins was carried off after just ninety seconds after an innocuous challenge. Fortunately it appeared to be more of a muscular injury than a break of any sort.

The youngsters put the disappointment behind them and flew into a two goal lead in the first eleven minutes. First, Adam Cleary headed home a throw in from Sam Ford before Cleary then set up Danny Williams for a second.

The two goal lead lasted only four minutes though as Woodley pulled a goal back for Oxford with a lob over keeper Ryan Peacock.

Just after the half hour, Oxford though they'd scored an equaliser but were denied by an offside flag from the assistant referee.

It mattered little though as a burst of three goals in nine minutes turned a goal deficit into a two goal lead for the visitors as Parish, McDonagh and then Woodley with his second completed a remarkable turnaround.

Remarkably there was a hiatus in the goalrush of almost half an hour before Adam Wakley set up Johnny Oliver to give Yeovil hope with fifteen minutes left.

All it did though was to sting Oxford into action again as another three strikes in nine minutes ended the game. Parrish scored his second, Woodley won the matchball with his third before Harwood completed the rout with four minutes left.

Mo Hopkins said after the game "At 2-0 up, we were looking good but then fell apart under pressure. We failed to deal with them today and not enough of our players rolled their sleeves up."
