Every one of over 140 children who took part in the tournament received a players' medal from Yeovil Town manager Terry Skiverton.

The tournament involved 17 teams from across the local area, which takes part in the highly successful social inclusion football coaching programme currently being run by Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust.

The tournament was organised by members of the Community Trust and the Royal Navy, with generous sponsorship from local businesses Connaught, Southern Electric Contracting, Rok, Mansells and Agusta Westlands.

The community football project, started last year with a pilot scheme at Southville, Reckleford and has grown, with the aid of funding from The Somerset and Mendip Community Safety Partnership and several Housing Associations, into seven different areas around Yeovil and district.

With courses now being held regularly at Crewkerne, Chard, Ilminster, South Petherton, Milford Yeovil, Westfield Yeovil, and Southville Yeovil funding is now being sought to continue the projects for 52 weeks a year.

Terry Skiverton, manager of Yeovil Town Football Club, took time out on Saturday to present the prizes and sign numerous autographs.

As well as the football the Royal Navy Sports Presentation team were on hand with fitness training and a beat the keeper machine for team members that still had energy to burn during their rest periods.

Commenting on the success of the project Community Trust manager Adrian Hopper said: "We are naturally delighted that from a little acorn of an idea the scheme has now spread as far and wide as it has.

"I'd like to thank the Somerset and Mendip Community Safety Partnership and Yarlington Housing Group for backing the scheme to the extent that they have.

"The tournament has provided a focal point for all the youngsters involved and given them something tangible to compete for to bring their first three months of coaching to a conclusion.

"All parties are anxious to make the tournament an annual event and there seems no limit to how far this project could spread with Housing Associations in North Taunton, Williton and Frome all anxious to get involved with the scheme."
