TOWNSEND DENIES HIS FORMER CLUB

Posted on: Tue 25 Aug 2009

Yeovil Town boss Terry Skiverton gave Andros Townsend his first taste of league football when he plucked the teenager from Tottenham's youth team earlier this year.

The winger's spell with the Glovers last season was mutually beneficial as he helped to keep Town in League One while developing his own career.

Unfortunately for Yeovil, it's their divisional rivals Leyton Orient who are now benefiting from his talents - and his wonder goal helped the Londoners earn a point at Huish Park on Saturday.

"It's typical, isn't it?" said Skiverton. "I spotted Andros from nowhere last year in the Spurs youth team and he comes back to haunt me. Brilliant!"

Brilliant is just one word to describe Townsend's superb individual strike that levelled the game at 2-2 just before half-time.

The youngster picked the ball up just outside his own penalty area and embarked on an electric run into Yeovil territory, leaving three defenders trailing in his wake.

Once the wideman reached the end of the Glovers box, he kept his composure and rounded Terrell Forbes before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But while recognising the quality of the goal, Skiverton felt his team could have done more stop Townsend's mazy dribble.

He said: "It was a great goal from Andros and everyone in the stadium knew what he would do once he picked up the ball.

"But if I'm being totally honest, one of my players should probably have fouled him earlier in the run and been prepared to pick up a yellow card for the challenge.

"We could have brought him done in our half, when there was no danger. Our players have got to be more ruthless in certain situations. They did it a couple of times and conceded fouls when we were in threatening positions. I remember one on Gavin Tomlin in particular, and we needed to do the same."

Skiverton had demanded a better start from his players after poor first half displays at Colchester and Exeter. And he got his wish with a high-tempo opening from the Glovers, despite falling behind to Scott McGleish's fifth-minute goal.

Huish Park was stunned when Stephen Purches crossed from the right and the veteran frontman thumped a header past the helpless McCarthy.

That followed an early chance for Andy Welsh and the hosts shrugged off the setback to quickly pull level.

The impressive Danny Schofield put Jon Obika clear of the Orient defence and he was bundled over by Charlie Daniels inside the area.

Tomlin stepped forward to convert his second penalty of the season - although Skiverton again opted to turn his back on the kick, as has become his superstition.

"I didn't watch the penalty against Tranmere and he scored that, so I thought I'd do the same again," said the Town manager.

"It seems to work because he scored again, so I'll continue doing it in the hope that it brings us a bit of luck."

After drawing level, Yeovil then dominated the rest of the first half, with Tomlin, Keiran Murtagh and Obika all threatening before they claimed a deserved lead.

Welsh spearheaded a quick break following an Orient corner, supported by Tomlin and Obika.

And he picked his moment perfectly to roll the ball to Obika, who swept the ball into the corner of the net despite slipping as he shot with his left foot. Unfortunately, Townsend's headline-grabbing intervention then ensured the visitors went in level at half-time.

But Yeovil came out fired up at the start of the second period and on 52 minutes they went ahead again. Stand-in captain Craig Alcock found Schofield on the edge of the area and the midfielder turned his marker before curling the ball past the despairing dive of Jamie Jones.

However the Glovers failed to hold on to their lead again and conceded a scrappy goal within five minutes to allow Orient to pull level.

The home side failed to clear a set-piece and Tamika Mkandawire crossed for Ryan Jarvis to rifle in from 10 yards.

That was the end of the scoring, although the game remained a remarkably open contest and both sides had chances to claim victory.

Orient came closest to bagging the three points through defender Ben Chorley, who was denied by an outstanding reflex save from McCarthy.
