So there you have it. More than nine months after the season began for Yeovil with a 2-0 victory over a Tranmere Rovers side coached by John Barnes, it is now all over and the Glovers know the identities of their twenty three opponents for next season.
With today's League Two playoff final producing promotion for Dagenham & Redbridge, Yeovil fans can now look forward to all their away trips in season 2010-11 and save themselves a few quid in fuel in the process with a reduction of 313 miles from last season.
The Daggers' 3-2 victory in the final completes the full set for League One next year and the immediate reaction is that the division looks a lot more regional than before. Plymouth's relegation from the Championship and AFC Bournemouth's promotion from League Two gives Yeovil fans no fewer than six trips of less than a hundred miles next season.
With Swindon missing out yesterday in the League One playoff final, they join Bristol Rovers, Exeter City and Southampton in providing local opposition and should see a healthy increase in the Huish Park attendances next season.
What is also striking is the like-for-like replacements. We lost champions Norwich City but they were replaced by fellow East Anglian side Peterborough United and Yorkshire giants Leeds United, runners-up to the Canaries, have been superceded by, er, Yorkshire giants Sheffield Wednesday.
League One basement strugglers Stockport County disappear from our north-west schedule but the Glovers will instead face neighbours Rochdale just nineteen miles up the road.
Trips up the M3 and round the M25 have been regular occurrences this past season but with Gillingham and Southend relegated and Millwall going up through the playoffs, Glovers fans will see less of the M25 next campaign although today's Wembley result will see one of those trips replaced.
Stat-minded supporters based in Yeovil will have worked out that this season, visitng every away ground would have meant a total mileage of around 8,275 miles whereas this coming season, the pounding of the roads reduces to 7,962 miles.
All in all, next season looks like being another attractive one as Yeovil prepare for their eighth season in the Football League and sixth successive in League One. Six local games plus the giants of Charlton Ahletic and Sheffield Wednesday, the return of managers Gary Johnson and Russell Slade and an intriguing match-up with resurgent Notts County offer great opportunites for some entertaining games next season.
