Yeovil crashed out of the Carling Cup at Huish Park tonight after being beaten 4-0 by Norwich City.

Grant Holt grabbed a hat-trick and Wes Hoolahan converted a penalty as four second half goals put paid to any chances Yeovil might have had of a cup run.

Norwich put the Glovers under pressure almost immediately and Cody McDonald headed over from Simon Whaley's cross in the second minute.Yeovil fought back and on eight minutes, Nathan Jones went on a long run but was upended just outside the box.

Scott Murray's low, driven free kick was sliced over his own bar by defender Jens Berthel Askou.

Now it was Norwich's turn to gain the upper hand with McDonald having two chances to score but spurning both opportunities.

Halfway through the first half, Yeovil had their first real chance. Sam Williams, playing up front in the absence of Dean Bowditch, was felled just outside the box but Jones curled his free kick narrowly wide.

By now, Yeovil were enjoying their best spell with Andy Welsh (pictured) again impressive on the left but couldn't make their pressure count.

Norwich then exerted more pressure with three corners in five minutes, the first of which led to a Michael Spillane volley being brilliantly cleared off the line by Murray. Murray then turned up at the other end but saw his shot go wide of the post.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Norwich took the lead with a penalty. Murray was adjudged to have brought down Adam Drury and Wes Hoolahan duly despatched the penalty sending Alex McCarthy the wrong way.

Yeovil weren't undone by the goal though and two flowing, sweeping moves, replicas of one another, saw firstly Murray then Welsh go close to the equaliser.

Manager Terry Skiverton threw on Jon Obika, signed on loan today, for Murray in an attempt to provide something different up front with Gavin Tomlin dropping back into midfield.

Just as the Glovers were beginning to look threatening, Holt popped up with his first goal and the visitors second. Whaley's cross from the right was allowed to bounce and Holt headed in from eight yards out.

This seemed to urge the Canaries on and they started creating chance after chance. In a five minute spell, McDonald hit the bar and saw three other opportunities go begging, leaving Yeovil all shook up.

The Glovers created one golden chance when Stefan Stam's glorious fifty-yard cross field ball was beautifully controlled by Welsh on the run. He cut inside and set up Tomlin but the striker couldn't get a shot in.

It was to prove decisive as the visitors broke away and scored straight away. Tom Adeyemi forced McCarthy into a save with his legs but the ball fell nicely for Holt, alone in the box, and he slipped in his second and Norwich's third.

A tiring Welsh was replaced by Nathan Smith and it was the young left-back, playing in midfield tonight, who nearly grabbed a consolation only to see his backward looping header drop wide of the post.

Right on time, Holt grabbed his hat-trick when he smacked home a shot off the right-hand post to give his side a fourth.
